| Mondreyes09-20-04, 09:38 PM | Is there a difference between the Unearthed Arcana & the Arcan Unearthed? |
| Mondreyes09-20-04, 10:31 PM | That was Arcana Unearthed |
| Kiri Sittori09-20-04, 11:41 PM | Yes, and it's huge. Arcana Unearthed is Monte Cook's alternate PHB, designed with an entirely different (and self-contained) campaign setting in mind. It's closer to the Sword & Sorcery product line than to D&D, and often incorporates elements from the S&S products. |
| Mondreyes09-21-04, 12:08 AM | Arcana Unearthed so it is different than the Unearthed Arcana? Were they both released in 3rd edition? |
| jagggar09-21-04, 12:57 AM | Unearthed Arcana is a bunch of house/optional rules for 3rd Edition. Definately different. They were both released in 3rd Edition. UA was released after 3.5. I don't know when AU was released. There are older titles with the same name as one of them though. |
| Greyman09-22-04, 05:32 AM | "Unearthed Arcana" was a title originally published in 2ed. Monte Cook/Malhavoc Press asked the Wizards for permission to use the name for a variant rulebook for his Diamond Throne campaign setting, and they allowed the use with the words shifted to "Arcana Unearthed". They claimed to have no plans to use the title in any form themselves at the time, but I think they may have been hedging their bets. It was published during 3.0, but uses a slight variation on that rule set, including a rather interesting non-vancian, proficiency-based magic system. Later, after the revision was released, the Wizards decided to publish a book of variant rules anyway and used the original name. Just to confuse things further, both books have a black cover (though Unearthed Arcana is actually a very deep blue). Just be carefull to pick up the one you want. To remember which is which, think of Monte's book as a players handbook for an Alternate Universe while the Wizards' is a Useful Addition to their rules. |
| gbnogkfs09-22-04, 05:36 AM | "Unearthed Arcana" was a title originally published in 2ed. 1st :D |
| Thomar_of_Uointer09-22-04, 10:58 PM | www.montecook.com is the official website for his products. |
| Aexalon09-25-04, 03:00 PM | Fortunately, in a couple of months, most of this confusion should clear out, as Monte will release a revised and expanded version of AU early next year, which will be called Arcana Evolved (http://www.montecook.com/mpress_AE_FAQ.html) |
| Nekode09-26-04, 07:04 AM | Arcana Unearthed, Unearthed Arcana, Urban Arcana, Complete Arcane, half a dozen 3rd party books which use the word arcane or arcana. It really does get excessive. |
| Edymnion09-26-04, 04:22 PM | To remember which is which, think of Monte's book as a players handbook for an Alternate Universe while the Wizards' is a Useful Addition to their rules.Lol, are you implying that Arcana Unearthed has no useful additions to the game in it? Well, actually, don't answer that... |
| Ranix09-27-04, 01:45 AM | Lol, are you implying that Arcana Unearthed has no useful additions to the game in it? Well, actually, don't answer that... ::shifty eyes:: |
| Steelgryphon09-28-04, 06:10 PM | or you could look at the author  |
| Ulorian09-28-04, 06:33 PM | Arcana Unearthed is a great book. It's worth getting for the magic system alone - basically similar to the standard D&D system, but much more flexible and the spells are much better balanced with respect to each other. The total power level of the spells is also lower in general, which makes it better balanced with non-spellcasting classes. |
| His Majesty09-30-04, 02:09 PM | You frightened me a bit with Arcana Evolved, so I checked it: Arcana Evolved (http://www.montecook.com/mpress_AE_FAQ.html) |
| Aexalon10-02-04, 09:00 AM | You frightened me a bit with Arcana Evolved, so I checked it: Arcana Evolved (http://www.montecook.com/mpress_AE_FAQ.html)Nothing to be scared of (it's more expanded than revised)... And the looking up of the appropriate link was already in my post as well. |
