You know, I thought up a great alternative to level adjustment a while back.

Drop all monstrous HD. Instead of score-10 for ability boosts, you get the bonus of the listed score as a plus to your roll (Thus a 30 score gives you a +10 bonus at level 1). You keep all special qualities, abilities, natural armor bonuses, etc.

Instead of a flat adjustment value, make the Level Adjustment value an experience adjustment using the following system:

exp you need for next level + (level you are currently x level adjustment x 100)

Ergo, a +2 adjustment at level 1 would boost your level 2 exp to 1200. For third, 3400, for fourth, 6600, and so on. I personally find this to be a much fairer system (Wizards, are you listening? This is good stuff.).

Before anyone asks, yes, with this you could arguably play a +10 adjustment at level 1. It is left completely up to the DM as to which LAs he will allow.

It looks to me like this works well in certain cases, using a few unwritten rules that you think are "Common Sense." Remember that Common Sense is a quantity often lacking at the gaming table.

It may work better, but the explanations for using this system in every concievable corner case seem to me to be too awkward and confusing to be practical.

LA is not balanced, in fact monsterous races were designed to appear weaker than base races. However, the system is static and constant, which makes it easy to use once you get all of the abbreviations figured out.
