Lesser abilitys? [Archive] - Wizards Community

An idea accrued to me recently. It's basically to let everyone use sneak attack/power attack/ect. even if they don't have levels in rogue or the feat. The catch is that they get a lesser version of it, like d4s rather than d6s, or a two-for-one for power attack.

What do you think?

While that might be a nice thought, such a thing might unbalance the game.

More then that you will have to think of a way to balance it out by lesser abilities special rules for every feat and ability you give every one to use.

Some might not even care about the penalties and drawbacks and use them the outshine the rogue in sneak attack and such.

Maybe back to 2nd edition? where there are no feats and called shots are allowed will be better for you then reinventing the wheel?

It's an interesting thought, but I'm not sure I understand the problem you're trying to solve. If you want any character to be (theoretically, at least) able to do anything, then you might be better served by the Generic Classes variant from Unearthed Arcana (which is OGC, and reprinted at d20srd.org (http://d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/genericClasses.htm) if you don't have the book).

My 20th level commoner has a lesser sneak attack, lesser rage, lesser power attack, lesser trapfinding, lesser improved evasion, lesser hide in plain site, lesser spellcasting allowing him to cast a lesser version of lesser wish, with a lesser smite attack, lesser exotic weapon profeceincy spiked chain with lesser improved trip, which he uses to make lesser wirlwind attacks when he's not lesser sprig attacking while using lesser combat reflexes and lesser karmic strike to defend himself. He also has access to lesser domains, a lesser animal companion, a lesser familiar, lesser leadership, a lesser special mount, and can use lesser wildshape to transform into a lesser dire bear. His character sheet is only 23 pages long.

In concept, it's a cool idea. In practice....

... in practice, there are no 20th level commoners ;)

Not to mention that no one gets that many feats :P

lesser sneak attack: 1d4 (And even then, I might make it only lesser sudden strike)
lesser rage: +2 str +2 con -3 armor. Last for your con mod.
lesser power attack: Cool, take that -2 to attack for that MASSIVE +1 damge
lesser trapfinding: Can't find traps DC 20+
lesser improved evasion: Save for helf damage, full if no save
lesser hide in plain site: you can hide if notone is obseving you and you have a place you can hide...
lesser spellcasting: Enjoy your once a day casting of Ray of Frost
lesser smite attack: Meh, you got me here... Maybe 1/4 of your cha mod?
lesser exotic weapon profeceincy spiked chain: Enjoy your -4 to attack
You get the idea.

Everyone can already do this under the current rules. The reason that trapfinding calls out specifically that the rogue can find traps with search DCs over 20 is that everyone can find traps with DCs lower than 20. In fact many of those things can be done by anyone already, perhaps you were being facesious?

You get the idea.

You are just an idea machine, aren't you? Good job. :) A couple issues tho.

lesser trapfinding is exactly what happens when you don't have trapfinding (the last poster already highlighted this).

same thing with lesser improved evasion.

lesser hide in plain sight: if noone can see you..then why are you hiding?

lesser spellcasting... thankfully, the Waking Lands has already done this as a feat HERE (http://wakinglands.com/htm_files/the_feats_page.htm)

lesser smiting seems like a good idea in theory, but 1/4 cha is simply TOO pathetic. If something could be worked out, I certainly wouldn't apply it to everyone. I'd reserve it to exalteds/viles and members of divine classes.

Really cool idea, but lines have to be drawn. :)
