| oberyn12-17-04, 03:56 AM | hello all im going to make a viking campaign and the normal form of magic just doesent seem right so i was thinking that maybe you could help me figure out a new system of magic having to do with runes. like basicaly casting all of the same spells just in a different way. i tried getting this going on the magic and spells board but it flopped. it would always have a somatic component since you would have to scribe the rune and i was thinking that to make a way to have spells(runes)/per day you could just have it so that it takes a cirtain amount of personal power or spellfire or whatever you want to call it, to scribe a rune into mid air so in this sense they would not have to constantly carry pens! but it just seems that runic magic would fit vikings better because they had close ties with runes and also because they believed very much in personal power. also i would love any sugestions on a rune mage casting class both divine and arcane |

IMO, this is really what the focus of a rune magic system ought to be - not just another wizard type. If you really want though, check out Burok Torn by Sword and Sorcery studios. They have a rune mage in there that works pretty well. |

Different combinations of runes will result in different spells. Say you have a rune board with 10 rows of 4. Each row represents a spell, so if you want a ice ball attack spell, the spell caster places say an energy ball attack, an ice rune and then the other two slots can be used for meta magic runes. You then calculate the Spell point of Spell level slot of the runes. For this I would suggest a spell point like system, since the Rune Caster make not be able to slot a spell for each level. The character can only change the runes once a day. OR At the begining of the day, the spell caster carves some runes onto a thumb size piece of shale. They have a certain amount of Rune Points (RP) a day to make thier daily runes. All the materials are needed at the time of the carving, to cast the spells the rune master either says the right word or breaks the shale. You can make it that the rune carver can keep his runes from the previous day, but that uses up RP equal to the amount on those exsiting runes. Only the rune master who carved the runes can use them. However maybe the rune master can use the Craft Potion Feat to make runes usuable by everyone, and Scribe Scroll Feat to make runes usable by other rune casters. |
| ArochanoX12-20-04, 03:32 PM | I've created a system like this for my runecaster base class. Atleast it could give you ideas. See my signature for the entire class. Runecasting Runecasters are the sort of spellcasters, who cast spells by scribing a rune to solid, non-living matter. Stone, metal etc. The matter must have volume of atleast 1 cubic feet. Casting a rune always requires a fullround action, though when rune is scribed, there can be set a delay of 1 to 5 rounds. Runes are quite big: most often 4" by 4". The runes are considered runes or runic spells, that arent arcane or divine - they're runic. Only this class can increase the ability to cast runes. Spell list at the bottom. The runes can be made better with metamagic feats. Runecasters are spontaneous casters like sorcerers but they know every rune like clerics. Runes never require material, focus or verbal components even though spell descriptor may say so. The target of the rune or the center of area is always the rune. Runecasters primary casting stat is intelligence and his bonus spells are determined by that stat too. Runecaster must have intelligence 10 + rune's level to be able to scribe it. |
| Cymraegmorgan12-20-04, 05:40 PM | The Ancient Norse used twenty-five Runes, but Christian missionaries deleted most references to the second Rune, Air, Frigga's Rune. Start each different casting class out with a different set of five. The Runes in their religious contextual order(with the associated English alphabetical equivalents): Elhaz(Z) Air(Q,QU) Fehu(F) Thurisaz(TH) Elwo(E) Ansuz(A) Eihwaz(Y) Othala(O) Hagalaz(H) Isa(I) Soweilo(S) Tiwaz(T) Jera(J) Uraz(U,V) Naudhiz(N) Raidho(R) Dagaz(D) Perdro(P) Kenaz(C,K) Laguz(L) Mannaz(M) Gebo(G,X) Wunjo(W) Berkano(B) Ingwaz(NG) Bards: Ansuz, Othala, Perdro, Kenaz, Raidho Clerics: Elhaz, Air, Mannaz, Dagaz, Gebo. Druids: Hagalaz, Isa, Soweilo, Berkano, Ingwaz Paladins: Elhaz, Air, Thurisaz, Tiwaz, Mannaz Rangers: Elwo, Eihwaz, Jera, Laguz, Hagalaz Sorcerers: Fehu, Othala, Jera, Perdro, Wunjo Wizards: Any five they choose. Divide the spells in the PHB into categories associated with the Runes. Examples are Fireball associated with Naudhiz, the needfire Rune, any Protection spells associated with Thurisaz, Thor's Rune. Have casters prepare spells every day by drawing them on small stones or pieces of wood with their own blood. Then the caster must use the stone and other material components to cast. these stones could even replace material components for most spells requiring simple, cheap components. Allow casters to gain insight into two or three more Runes every time a new spell level is available to them. Assigning spell points ala UA to each Rune would be a good way to set spells per level. |
