Do people use this at all? I'm curious about their experiences with it. I'm likely to use it in my campaign, as I think a more powerful Cleric ought to have a greater degree of direct control over how much positive energy they can channel, but I'm looking at this from the player's perspective as well: My Paladin is currently 13th level, on the verge of 14th, and her 15th level is going to be her first level of Knight of the Chalice, from The Complete Warrior. But my Dungeon Master and I have talked it over, and he's agreed to let me use the Censure Demons ability from the class' original appearance in Defenders of the Faith. With that in place, I'm thinking of asking him if I can use the Level Check variant for the Censure Demons check, but I wanted to find out what others' experience with it was first. Thoughts?

I like it, mostly because it seems a lot more in line with the d20 system. However, Level Check Turning takes a bit of getting used to. It requires a lot more dice rolls for one thing.

When you go up against more powerful undead you'll wind up holding them more often than actually turning them, and you have to concentrate to maintain the hold. On the other hand, you will actually have a chance to affect them. Plus, the holding the undead in place isn't a bad option at all, if you can rely on your party to protect you while you're a little bit vulnerable doing your thing.

I really only like this variant because it's easy to remember how it works - no consulting a chart whenever the cleric needs to turn undead. So, I'm using it in my next campaign and I guess I'll learn then if it does anything wonderful or terrible to the game.
