Low point buy Gestalt with stipulations - Feedback welcomed. [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-12-05, 08:57 PM I've decided to let my players run gestalt characters. Here are some of the stipulations...

Start at 1st level
Max starting gold
18 point buy
No multi-classing
No prestige classes.
Players start with 8, 10, 10, 10, 10, 12, 14 for ability scores.
Can't take two spellcasting classes, but one is required for each player (paladins and rangers don't count in this regard as they acquire spells but don't begin with them, so paladin/cleric, ranger/druid combinations are possible).
PHB classes only.

I'm going for the 1e dual-class concept except for mixing heroic stats with the flexibility and strengths of Gestalt.

The low point buy means that each player can raise one ability score to a competitive level, but only at the cost of alienating his second class. For example, an high-elf wizard/rogue might have 18 int. at 8th level, but has only a 12 dexterity. He may, however, increase two ability scores (through racial modifiers and 4th level increases) to a reaosnable level (say, a sixteen and a fouteen) by eighth level, however. My thinking behind this is that people generally have one or two areas in which they shine, but rarely do we meet people that excel across the board; that is, the uber-types, that seem to litter the D&D landscape. Note- I'm aware that D&D is not the real world. :)

Additionally, this creates a greater need for magic than ever before. Characters suddenly think of magic as necessary as opposed to simply icing on the cake of an otherwise powerful build.

Anyway, this is my take on a 'balanced' gestalt campaign, if there is such a thing.

07-13-05, 04:20 AM So, it's not really point buy, right? You're handing out an array. Or am I misunderstanding? Also, your array comes out to 20 point buy.

I don't know what you mean about characters that "excel across the board." Standard D&D with 25 point buy doesn't seem to simulate that.

Anyway, it seems like an interesting idea.
