Any suggestions on which systems from UA would be appropriate? |
| Mufflon05-16-06, 11:13 AM | I'd suggest the Reserv Point system, which Iron Heroes (Which doesn't have any healing classes) uses to good effect. The VP/WP system might be appropriate as it has faster natural recovery that the HP system. |

The VP/WP system definitely captures some of the, "holy s***, that 15th level guy just got killed in one hit!" nastiness that adds some realistic flavor to your campaign. (I've had 17th level solo bad guys run from 4 7th level PCs... with good reason.) It still takes a long time to heal from wound damage: usually 1 WP/day, up to 4/day under total bed rest and medical care. That can put a hurting on your dungeon crawls. And until you're back to full WP, you're fatigued and taking penalties. If you go this route, I recommend also considering adding the class Defense bonuses to AC, like Star Wars does. This makes high-level characters last a little longer, as the big bad fighter might not confirm that crit and insta-kill you. Might take some tweaking, but it's one of the reasons the Star Wars RPG actually works. OTOH, the reserve point system is a lot more swashbuckling. (Ironically, it's a lot more like the Star Wars universe than the SWRPG, which uses VP/WP...) You can pretty much bounce from fight to fight and not have to worry too much. If you're not looking for grit, this is a really good way to go, because it lets the adventuring continue. Since you're citing the lack of healing as a problem (rather than a, "hey you dummies, this is what you get"), I'm thinking that this alternative will appeal to you more. |

Instead of dice damage, you have a straight up damage bonus. You roll for damage, and what you get sets the Save DC the other guy has to make. If they make the save, nothing happens. If they just barely miss it, they get a few penalties (like -1 to future saves), if they miss it by a lot, they get severely injured or knocked out/killed. |
