For gritty games where combat is to be taken more conservatively, why not make a homebrew system involving lowering the hit die of PC classes?

d4=d2
d6=d3
d8=d4
d10=d6
d12=d8

What'cha think? You notice there's only about a 1hp curve untill you get more toward warrior type classes and becomes 2hp curve. As opposed to the strictly 2hp curve of all hit die.

This doesn't really leave room for scratches at low level. Nor does it prevent high level humans from being able to take more damage than a pair of large warhorses.

Seriously. Wounds/vitality.

Wouldn't it be easier to just remove 1 or 2 hp per level?

Now nobody would want to play a fighting character and you make CON that much more important. The classes that already avoid fighting just became a LOT more dangerous as hp aren't important to them but their massive spell damage suddenly becomes a lot more dangerous.

If you want gritty the wound (Con Score)/vitality (normal hp) system works well.
