Hi, I'm about to start my first D&D game in years, but it's with an experienced group of friends. However, there's one thing I'd like to change: I'd like to make it possible (though not necessarily easy or cheap) to repair magical items. Legacy Weapons in particular.

I had some ideas myself, but I'd like to hear how other DMs have house-ruled this.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

The Repair Damage line of spells allows that as lon as the item has at least 1hp (i.e. not completely broken).

Otherwise, you could introduce a new spell that allows the reforging of broken magical items... the level would depend upon the magnitude of the effect (from setting them at 1hp to recomposing them as if they'd never been broken).

wish or limited wish can do this i believe. Generally i dont sunder things the PC's have, and the PCs generally dont do it either. The players view it as "if we break it i cant sell it later on" and the villans view it the same way.

I simply allow an appropriate craft check with a +10 to the DC to restore the magic properties of an item. Permanently destorying powerful items with a simple sunder attack sounds a bit harsh to me. They still lose the item for this fight and they have to invest some time and resources when they have to repair it but it's not simply gone forever.

Permanent destruction is still possible, of course, by disintegrating, burning, melting down, digesting or something like that.
