That's so broken! Good will save? Drop it to poor, and take away the bonus feats, the familiar, and the scribe scroll feat. That should do it.

Oh, and d2 HD? Any objections?

Sounds good to me! I would play it. I will go ask my DM to see if he will let me be this class, It is balanced so he should say yes!

This is funny. I have played in a Dragonlance campaign with a magic-less wzard and his magic-less apprentice. The best thing they could do was make alchemical items. They were also good at draining xp from the rest of the party.

I'm not joking...

Thats a real horror story. I will never look at Dragonlance the same way again.

I actually thought this *would* be a thread about an alchemy-themed wizard. Silly me.

Yeah! you anticipated me: I was going to create a "wizard without spells" thread after I was annoying of seeing the many "ranger without spells", "paladin without spells", "bard without spells"...

Paladin needs spells, Bard needs spells. Rangers don't :) it does not fi the theme.

An expert would make an excellent magicless wizard. The skills would include: use magic item, spellcraft, knowledge (arcana) and other knowledge skils.

Plus, they can wear armor and use weapons.

I suspect that a "magic-less" wizard would focus more on alchemy and herbalism than your common D&D style of spellcasting. If your DM allows exotic plants and other stuff with weird properties in his campaign world, I can see this style of wizard being quite useful -- especially if you also throw in a greater ability to use the Incantations from Unearthed Arcana (now THAT was an awesome idea), like the Occultist from D20 Modern.

Maybe throw in some other cool abilities as class features, such as a wizardly version of Bardic Knowledge to reflect wizards' general penchant for knowing a lot of weird stuff in fantasy fiction.

Rincewind is the ultimate example of a wizard with no spells. Maybe a Rogue with a lot of points in Use Magic Device and the Run feat.

the mongoose publishing Alchemist power class is sort of non-magic wizard, but it does have some magic stuff (wish 1/year at level 20!) with a bit of work it could be brought up to 3.5... that said, carting round an alchemist lab is not fun...

I am going to take your question seriously. Yes, it is possible to have a magicless mage character class. He or she would use skills instead of spells.

I just remembered, Dragon 335 has a 5 level prestige class called the "Charlatan"

They gain the ability to "cast" certain spells via Alchemical Trickery. So you get a fake wizard whose "Spells" work in an antimagic field.

Specifically, the spells are Burning Hands and Flare (1st Level), and Glitterdust, Obscuring Mist and Pyrotechnics at third level.

There are also Mind Affecting spells that the charlatan can duplicate,. Like Charm Person, Scare (one target only) Command and Tasha's Hideous Laughter.

They even gain a mundane version of Dispel Magic and the ability to turn entire communities against their leaders.

Of course, the Charlatan lives a lie, so someday, someone will come along and say that that archmage is a fake.

The Magicless Wizard:
At any given time in the history there has always been cultures that have hated the whole concept of magic. Guilds, nations and even whole races have thought of it as something cowardly, useless or just evil.
When spellcasters moved into such cultures they soon realized they had to keep their skills in secret. They could no longer keep their spellbooks available or go around buying spell components. During the generations these spellcasters lost their ability to cast spells.

Adventures: Magicless wizards adventure for many reasons. Some want to expand their knowledge of how the world works while the others want to find a way to get them back their ability to cast spells. Some want to get away from the culture and actually see the magic that they have spent their whole life reading of and some want to teach their ancient lore to the next generation.

Characteristics: The Magicless wizards favor knowledge over everything else. They also specialize in sciences such as alchemy.

Alignment: The alignment of a magicless wizard can be anything but as the class depends on knowledge over all, it depends in years of solitary studying. As such the chaotic characters often find it impossible to be patient enough for this class.

Religion: Ironically enough, many of the magicless wizards favor Boccob, the deity of magic. Evil magicless wizards however seem to find Vecna, the god of magic, secrets and knowledge, the most logical choice.

Background: Not all the magicless wizard have once been spellcasters nor their parents have been. Creatures with spell-like abilities but nobody to tech them spells find themselves often looking for more and more knowledge. It is not uncommon for a wizard to abandon their magic when falling in love with a member of a culture that prohibits magic.

Races: Magicless wizards can be found with all the races that can become sorcerers, wizards or the like. Especially races with spell-like abilities suit magicless wizards.

Other Classes: Magicless wizards feel great respect but also envy the spellcasters. Warrior classes can help to defend a class with no actual fighning proweness.

Role: A magicless wizard has great anmounts of knowledge and as such is good help in virtually any party. However the magicless wizards can neither cast spells nor fight well so they are often underestimated.
