Basically the way it works there is every time you level up you make a profession check with a DC = to your current wealth modifier, if you succeed this increases by 1 and +1 more for every 5 points you beat the DC.

I don't want to adapt the wealth mechanic itself (mostly because I like treasure troves) but having the profession skill grant a non neligible amount of money in this way might make it worthwhile.

The trouble is devising a fair amount to make the skill investment worthwhile without being over the top. And that's the part I need help with.

A method I would suggest trying is to have the players track the total value of all of thier equipment. Then use whatever method you like to convert gold pieces into dollars (I think there might be a conversion in d20 past). After look up the dollar value up on the chart in d20 Modern that converts purchase DC to dollar value.

Now you have a purchase DC for the value of a players equipment, from there you can use whatever method you like to get a wealth modifier. I would recommend setting the players wealth modifier at the total equipment purchase DC-20 since in d20 modern a player can take 20 on thier wealth check to buy stuff.

From there you can make a profesion check to determine the wealth increase. You then referance add 20 to the wealth total covert that number to dollars, subtract the players original dollar value from the new total, and convert the answer back to gold.

Basicly it is a long complicated process, and at very high wealth bonuses will convert to insane amounts of gold, possibly game breaking amounts of gold.

Well, here's my conversion chart for wealth. It's not that bad, actually, it's very much on par with D20 Modern and works just fine.

If I used this, I might also figure out a chart for magic items like what D20 Modern uses (something like +5 DC for every +1 bonus, or whatever the FX items use). This also fixes the problem of a +1 dagger being terrible compared to a +1 greatsword, as the enhancement is instead a simple increment of the item's purchase DC.
