What if I were to change Favored Class: X to Favored Class: First class chosen. This, to me, represents how learning earlier in life is easier (4x skill points), and also allows for some variety in races.

I assume you mean just for humans (and half-elves, etc.), since they are the only ones with flexible favored classes? That would make them weaker, as whole, though in certain circumstances it could be beneficial.

I can see the point behind your idea, though. It makes sense that what you train for first in sticks with you. However, it also makes sense that what you train the most in sticks (which is why its your highest level class).

Actually I meant all races. I'm deisgning this for a campaign featuring human variants but no Favored Class: Any humans, and the half-elves have favored classes just like everyone else.

The thing is that I don't see the point of favored classes anymore. It works if you have a limited area where the races are of generally the same culture and each culture has a focus, but even then it doesn't make sense: one member of a race might break away early and train so extensively in another class that it's easier for them to train in that class than in the race's original favored class.

I guess I just should have asked this question: what do I have to change to allow all races to have "Favored Class: Any"?

That change would make Humans and Half-Elves relatively weaker, since the 'any' favored class is one of their advantages over other classes. You would want to either give them some other advantage to compensate, or make the other classes all weaker.

@ideasmith, While replacing favored class any with favored first class taken does weaken races with this ability. I would still let the feature of favored class any overide favored class first. With this change the houserule doesnt change the characters abilities.

Maybe Humans and Half-Elves could have favoured class: All, or first two classes taken.

I'd go with Nebo's suggestion and allow humans free multiclassing. I do that anyway. Then you can use your idea for non-humans.

what do I have to change to allow all races to have "Favored Class: Any"? I'm assuming you mean Favoured Class: choice.

Favoured Class:Any usually means the same ability as Humans and Half-Elves.

I think a selection of choices could be made available to characters of specific races at Creation and they may use that one as a substitution to the normal Class.

Gnomes could have Illusionist in lieu of Bard.

Elves could have Bard in lieu of Wizard.

You could let all the other races have favored class: any (as in the highest one) and then let classes that have favored class: any have favored class: choice (i.e. they choose)...

I don't know if this keeps the relative power consistent but it at least bumps humans to something better which kind of addresses the problem...
