Basically, I've decided that alignment is so thoroughly incorperated into the system that taking it to it's logical conclusion might be interesting. I've already got a campaign appropriate explication of the following system. The idea would be that while each creature has full free will, certain actions accumulate associations with ones alignment. These associations can be detected (through the detection spells), or allow certain energies to influence one (through the various abjuration spells). Outsiders would have less free will, thus leaving their alignments relatively unchanged. Other creatures would be unaware of alignment energies, and thus their typical behaviors would determine what sorts of energies they accumulated. In addition, some creatures would not accumulate alignment energies at all (like most animals), and thus always be neutral. When I run a game, good = compassion, evil = callousness, law = consistency, and chaos = independence. I'm not going to debate these points. My idea would be that, similar to the Neverwinter Nights game, each character would have two alignment attributes, Morals and Ethics. These would each have three ranges, the two extremes and the middle ground. For example, a Good aligned character might have a Morals attribute of G7, representing being a good guy who isn't dedicated to kindness, but with really strong tendency in that direction. These would be the attributes and their breakdowns: Morals: Good 15 to 6, Neutral 5 to -5, and Evil -6 to -15. Ethics: Law 15 to 6, Neutral 5 to -5, and Chaotic -6 to -15. I made Good and Law positive values arbitrarily, the ranges could just as easily be reversed. The system would be implemented by indicating a series of specific behaviours that would potentially modify ones alignment scores. These behaviors and what changes they would apply might be made known, either wholly or in part, to the players. Any thoughts? |

This is the point where you are still considered the alignment that you were, but with tendencies toward the direction your alignment is shifting. Example, you were good aligned and shift to 66 and would be considered good with neutral tendencies. This is the range that some classes, such as, clerics may be reminded that if they continue they might have a problem with their deity. |
