I'm just putting this here for reference.

I worked out the formula (which is quite wierd) and fraccional progression for the Medium Save bonus yesterday. It goes like this:

Formula: 1 1/5 + 2/5 class level

FRACC
MED MED
LVL SAVE SAVE
1 +1 +1 3/5
2 +2 +2
3 +2 +2 2/5
4 +2 +2 4/5
5 +3 +3 1/5
6 +3 +3 3/5
7 +4 +4
8 +4 +4 2/5
9 +4 +4 4/5
10 +5 +5 1/5
11 +5 +5 3/5
12 +6 +6
13 +6 +6 2/5
14 +6 +6 4/5
15 +7 +7 1/5
16 +7 +7 3/5
17 +8 +8
18 +8 +8 2/5
19 +8 +8 4/5
20 +9 +9 1/5I assume that this progression was determined by visually arranging numbers on a table, because there is no way anyone would have thought "medium save" and started thinking about 5ths.

you say increase by 1/5 per class level yet the table increases by 2/5. I assume you mean 2/5 since it works out that way.

Oops, my mistake. It's 2/5. Thanks.

Shouldn't it start out as 1-2/5?

I look at it this way: A good save starts out with 2-1/2 (2 base and 1/2 for level). As such a mid save should be 1-2/5 (1 base and 2/5 for level).

I guess it breaks down to where did that extra 1/5 come from at level 1?

And 1 2/5 wouldn't reach 2 until level 3. As written, it works better, I think.

I think it came from just averaging the good and poor saves at each level. Each time it equals the Medium save. ;) Did it myself a while ago, didn't think to post it. Oh well. :D

As the person who created the Medium save progression for Star Wars when I was still a neophyte designer, I can say that's pretty much dead-on accurate. The design team wanted something between the polar extremes of "Good" and "Poor" saves, and that progression split the difference.

I remember, some time after I created the progression, Jonathan Tweet asked me what formula I'd used to build it. After I stared blankly at him for a few seconds, he realized that the 3E designers *hadn't ever told anyone* that there was a formula hiding behind the good & bad save progressions.

That's sorta crazy that people didn't realize...I never realized that people didn't know it was a formula. I guess having a group entirely of engineers helps a bit. Damn nerds. ;)

EDIT: Err, I just realized that could be taken insultingly, no insult was meant.

Didn't know you were the one who wrote it, Andy. But in any case, it works out nice enough with this formula. So now you can tell Johnathin Tweet that the formula is definitly a very normal 1 1/5 + 1/5 class level. :D

Beautiful work, by the way, on everything related to UA, and especially the racial paragons.
