| Patrick Draken-Korin12-01-05, 09:50 PM | i just had a really cool, idea while looking through this forum (unearthed arcana... etc). metamagical effects; these are effects that either mimic an actual metamagic feat (but usually in a weaker manner) or cause a similar alteration to a spell. the spellcaster would cast the spell as normal, except that it would have to make a spellcraft check. note that taking 10 IS NOT AN OPTION. if the check fails, the spell is cast normally. if the check fails by 5 or more, the spell fails completely. if the check succeeds, the spell is altered. certain alteration would have scaling effects (every 10 or 20 points beyond the base DC would upgrade the alteration). base DC's would depend on the exact metamagical effect and be increased by +2 per spell level of the spell to be altered. since most base DC's would be in the 15 to 30 range, few non-epic spellcasters would attempt to alter spells above level 5 (that's a +10 modifier). two things: 1) balancing- as the system so far, it could work, but that's partially because i haven't decided on any actual effects. there should probably either be a feat required to manage this at all, or else there should be, say, a -10 penalty on any attempts to do this without the feat (so a level 15 wizard with maxed spellcraft ranks and 20 int could attemp DC's of 23 or lower without too much worry, but wouldn't dare DC's above 28). 2) what actual effects should be used? most metamagic feats in the PHB can be downgraded (+25% or 50% rather than 100%, minimum damage equals average dice damage rather than maximized, etc) other ideas? hope this mechanic can work. it could deffinetly prove to be interesting (and unfortunetly, overpowered). thanx for replies! |
