| The Livewire07-02-07, 07:33 AM | Would taking the Wilderness Rogue varient and swapping out sneak attack for feats, ala the feat rogue varient be unbalanced? Or have I now found a magic free ranger worth playing? |
| claypigeons07-02-07, 02:24 PM | If your DM allows the "Feat Rogue", then you should be fine. The wilderness rogue is just a rogue with a couple different class skills (in exchange for others). Also, I'd consider it more of a scout with alternate class features, than a ranger-lite. |
| trapspringer07-02-07, 02:33 PM | Generally speaking, as long as you can pay the cost in sacrificed abilities you're good to go. Of course everything in UA requires DM approval. |

| WackyOne07-02-07, 04:57 PM | It's more than a ranger with no magic: it's a ranger with less fighting ability (bab), but more tricks up his sleeve (feats). And less damage than a rogue (sneak attack) or a ranger (mostly bab) - I'd ask the dm for a scout with skirmish replaced by feats, if that's what you want... or just play a scout. I'd see the double replacement you want as balanced - but select your feats wisely, for those will have to supplant your sneak attack! |
| Seldriss07-02-07, 05:25 PM | I am personally using many variants, to give options to my players (and to my npcs). One of my favorite ranger variant is the ranger scout : No spells and no combat styles, but skirmish (as a scout). No racial enemy but environment of choice. Wild empathy, animal companion, fast movement, pass without trace, woodland stride... Although it is emulating the skirmish of the scout, it doesn't replace that class, who is still more proficient in his abilities. One of my players is playing one of these, a duergar, who is also rogue. It gives him two options during the combats : stealth (sneak attacks) or movement (skirmish). |

Oh yes, they just get SLAs instead. I know I'm sacrificing a lot of staying power, but I like JOAT characters, and am looking for SRD ideas, that's why I'm not looking at the scout. Thanks for the suggestions and input! |
