if you have the savage species you know that the centaur, for example is listed as one of the 6 level monster classes...

what if, however, instead of doing it this way, you allowed the player to chose the base race...and then taking the other levels as a racial paragon...

in order to balance it out, you would need to spread the abilities across more levels...to counteract the LA...

so...is there anything against changing the centaur monster class progression into a....say....8 level racial paragon class?

or....like....turning a minotaur monster class into a 10 level racial paragon class instead of an 8 level monster class?

so instead of going a few levels without hit dice, you get hit dice every level...its just you powers are more spread out....

Or like turning the LA +1 duergar race into a 3 level duergar racial paragon...

For Example...an easy one to do is the Aasimar...

Racial Traits
- Starting Ability Score Adjustments: +2 Cha.
- Medium: aasimar are medium size.
- Speed: aasimar base land speed is 30 ft.
- Darkvision (Ex): An aasimar has darkvision to a 60-foot range.
- Light (Sp): The aasimar may use light (caster level equals the aasimar's character level) once per day.
- Skill Bonuses: An aasimar has a +2 racial bonus on Listen and Spot checks.
- Resistances (Ex): An aasimar starts play with resistance 2 to acid, cold, and electricity.
- Automatic Languages: Celestial, Common. Bonus Languages: Draconic, Dwarven, Elven, Gnome, Halfling, Sylvan.
- Favored Class: Cleric

then the paragon progression
HP: d8
SP: 4+Int
lvl/bab/f/r/w/special
1/0/0/0/2/darkvision +30 ft
2/1/0/0/3/daylight 1/day
3/2/1/1/3/Wis +2

Let me see if I understand what you are proposing.    Basically you're saying that if having LA means that you have more special features than is appropriate for your HD, then adding enough featureless HD will ballance things out.

This is something like taking a 0 HD:+3 LA template, like half-dragon, and converting it into a 10 HD:+0 LA prestige class, the dragon disciple.  Let's say ~9 HD, since the DD adds a few features to make up the difference.

Using that as a basis, it would seem that features which produce 1 LA could be granted by class levels if those features were spread out over about 3 HD. Assimar 0 HD:+1 LA → 3 HD Centaur: 4 HD:+2 LA → 10 HD Duergar: 0 HD:+1 LA → 3 HD Minotaur: 6 HD:+2 LA → 12 HD
