Multiple Save Attempts Like Multiple Attacks? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Base attack bonuses allow for multiple attacks, each with a -5 penalty after the last, and cannot go below a +1 base attack bonus.

Now, consider this: Players can reroll a save they find low before learning its result, as long as they have a +7 or higher base save and are willing to throw at a -6 penalty. (If your base save is +12, and you make a saving throw that you're afraid might fail, you can roll again at a +6 instead, taking whatever the new result is.)

This would allow for players with higher saves to be able to make up for crappy luck, but not in a way that's too powerful (taking a -6 on a save is a significant penalty), and most certainly not in a way that guarantees success.

Would you approve of this? If so, would a natural 1 count as an auto-fail without reroll?

That sounds good. :)

Hm. Well, I'm glad someone likes it...

Anyone else agree or disagree?

As long as it only works for players and not NPCs, it's cool.

Otherwise Mage characters are robbed of some of their class' power, save-or-die and save-or-wish-you-were-dead spells, as well as more roleplay-oriented spells like Charm.

Looks unbalancing. It gives no benefit to weaker characters, but makes the guys with stronger saves even less likely to fail their saving throws.

You don't have to reroll saving throws. It's optional.

Sure, it's optional, but you'd be dumb not to take up the option if it's available and you rolled low enough. Only people with very high base saving throws anyway would have the option, so they are the only ones who could benefit from this option.

Just use action points. Higher level characters get more action points, and get to roll mulitple action dice and pick the best.
