From the Unearthed Arcana open content:

"Musclebound

You are good at almost everything that requires strength, but less adept than most at tasks that require coordination.

Benefit
You gain a +1 bonus on Strength-based skill checks and ability checks.

Drawback
You take a -2 penalty on Dexterity-based skill checks and ability checks.

Roleplaying Ideas
Characters with this trait are likely to solve problems with physical strength rather than through trickery or finesse."

Are Initiative checks considered to be ability (Dex) checks for the purposes of this trait? Are grapple checks considered ability (Str) checks?

Init is not a skill in 3.5, neither is grapple. So no the trait applys to neither.

Agree.

An ability check is like "roll strength" or "roll dex."

A skill check is like "roll jump" or "roll open locks."

They each refer to specific things. I think there's an online glossary floating around on the main page if you wanna' check for sure.
