Mystic Theurge variant? [Archive] - Wizards Community

So, I've been contemplating playing a Cleric/Sorcerer/Mystic Theurge using the spontaneous divine caster and battle sorcerer variants. Problem is, I make my sacrifices for the variants (spells known/per day/etc) and the basic Theurge seems to be a bit of a penalty as far as HD and BAB goes.

Would it be a safe variant to increase the Mystic Theurge HD to d8 and BAB to that of a cleric if someone uses both of the above variants?

No... The force of the Mystic Theurge is that he gains 2 caster levels ( one of each) per level, and that is almost to much as it is, so it is only logical that he only gains the weakest base attack bonus and HD.
Anything else would be Gestalt creep... :banghead:

So Much Munchkin.....

I took the PrC to be more like using the lower of the two class features. So for normal divine/arcane caster it would be d4 HD and Good Will save regardless of the combo you make.

Any other opinions?

I'm also heading towards this (sorceror 1/favored soul 2 at the moment) and had the same misgivings at first, but you can always bump up your cleric levels for the better bab and hd.

Be sure to take the practiced spellcaster feat as many times as needed to get both of your classes casting at character level.

I think he is asking about this b/c he gave up power to increase the sorceror to the battle sorceror. And where the mystic theurge normally has the same stats as a sorceror his variant is not as powerful as the normal mystic theurge. he is not being a "munchkin" he is raising a concern b/c he gave up something to get something and now is worried the trade will screw his character over.

Unfortunately i dont like the battle sorceror and have to say- no it is not ok. The sorceror benefits more from the mystic theurge then a wizard (who at least gives up something for it). You just made some bad choices and now have to live with them.

Of course your DM allowed you to take the variant, so it may be possible to convince him differently.

If you're asking as a player, I'm going to say SHOVE IT!! You need to talk with your DM and fellow players about what they want in the game and not ask anonymous strangers on the internet to bolster your arguments for why your character should be more powerful.

If you're asking as a DM, I'm going to say, good lord man, give it to him. The MyTH is unplayably weak as written from levels 4 to at least 29 and needs absolutely as many gimmes as it can get.
