It goes like this: an item (currently a gauntlet or a buckler, may be changed) that gathers energy from recently slayed creatures, and later can convert this energy on the GP cost for creating a magic item. The item “earns” 100 GP for each ND of the creature. When the wilder have gathered enough energy (gp) he can enhance a magic item – just like item familiar – but the gp cost is paid with the energy from the item. The wielder pays xp normally. I’m thinking of making this a lesser artifact, like a plot device. I think it’s too good for a feat and can’t really be priced as a magic item. Any considerations? |

| SolenVlos08-17-06, 03:14 PM | What about hand of Kas, the vampire foe-friend of vecna? I'm just not sure about the 100 gp per ND. perhaps should be smaller, like 75GP per HD? |
| shavna08-17-06, 04:00 PM | I like the idea and calling it the Hand of Kas makes sense. About how much gp to grant per HD I would say drop it to about 50gp. But this choice really depends upon how powerful the creatures that you run against your players are. Most of my campaigns end up being pretty powerful, so it could be feasable for them to kill something powerful enough to make something after just one encounter. One thing I'd like to know is if the energy that is stored within the device is able to be split up between several different items or if any surplus is just burned off. I think if you don't go with the gauntlet idea then it should be a weapon; this is because lots of times things that take the souls or soul energy from something has to be touching the victim. There's a type of metal in one of the multitude of D&D books that can actually do this, I'd say which but I have no books with me atm. Another thing I thought of is whether or not this item would be seen as evil or just another tool, and also what happens to the soul of someone that is affected by it like someone in the party or a BBEG. |
| SolenVlos08-17-06, 04:35 PM | well, let me show some of the math I did on this. to level up, an avarege group of four lvl1 players must win xp from 14 encounters with ND 1. that would grant them 1050xp, and if they used this item(100gp per nd), they would also have 1400 gp, which is less than the minimun to enhance an armor +1 to an armor +2. assuming that this is a "group item", not one item per player, otherwise each player would have 350 gp, A.K.A. almost nothing. |
| shavna08-17-06, 10:57 PM | I guess I was mostly thinking of how my group works in which the artifact would be kept by one player who would pretty much benefit from it. Seeing your math helps it make more sense. |
