Need ideas for how to work spontaneous metamagic at epic levels [Archive] - Wizards Community

I love the unearthed arcana variant for applying metamagic feats spontaneously to a spell a certain number of levels below the spellcaster's highest level spell slot. It's a nice change from the "pay for it once as a feat, then pay for it again in spell levels" standard metamagic system. My question is, how can I still use this system at epic levels?

At epic levels, there are no spells of 10th level or higher. Instead, spell slots of higher than 9th are filled with metamagic versions of older spells. However, under the variant system, metamagic no longer takes up the spell level of the spell, so this doesn't work. What sort of rule should I use so that players still have something they can do with their spell slots of 10th level and higher? I'd rather not have a system that works the variant way at normal levels but strangely switches back to the old system at epic levels, as they would feel too disjointed. Anyone have any ideas how I can make this work?

Well, you can make a feat that gives you a "virtual spell level." When you take it, it raises the spell level for determining the highest level you can use metamagic feats.

Or you could take Epic Metamagic feats that are improved versions of the normal feats. You have a few dimensions to work with in this case. You can improve the functioning of the ability in some way. You can make it usable more times per day (or perhaps even at will for some feats). And you can allow the metamagic feat to be applied to higher level spells. Don't be afraid to come up with Improved and Greater versions that keep building on the same metamagic ability, if it's warranted.

What you need to figure out is what you think would be balanced.
