This file contains descriptions of some new feat categories that I invented. If you have comment of it, or any feats that can belong to it, can you please write a reply? I might include some new feats in a file that I am making.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minor Feats
Minor feats are feats that are not worth as much as normal feats. When you take a minor feat, you get to take another minor feat at the next level and another minor feat at the level after that. (These extra minor feats do not also give you additional minor feats.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Action Feats
Action feats are similar to action points. It might or might not give you a minor continuous benefit, but it also has one activated ability, that when activated, causes you to lose the feat. (You may still gain the feat again later.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Preparation Feats
To gain the benefit of a preparation feat, you must prepare it at the beginning of the day. You can only prepare one preparation feat each day. Preparation feats taken after the first are taken as minor feats.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Substitution Feats
When taking a substitution feat, you do not increase your class level or anything based on your class level (attack bonus, class abilities, hit dice per class, save bonus, etc.) but you still get bonus hit points based on constitution, and other things not based on classes. The substitution feat might give you hit points or attack bonuses or stuff, but it can give you other things as well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Interference Feats
Interference feats may have effects like other feats do, but they also let you interfere with other interference feats (they could be your own or interference feats belonging to other creatures).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unknown Feats
Unknown feats are feats that the effect is unknown to the players, only the Dungeon Master knows the effect of these feats, the players have to figure it out by themself. At any time you go up a level, you may replace an unknown feat with any other feat if you do not want this feat anymore. The DM should give clues as to the effect of unknown feats by the name and prerequisites of the feats. If you want, you can charge experience points for replacing an unknown feat. It costs 50 XP per character level to replace it with another unknown feat, 100 XP per character level to replace it with a minor feat, and 150 XP per character level to replace it with any other feat.

Minor feats are an interesting idea - somebody might actually take those +2/+2 feats this way.

Action feats would have to really damn good to merit only being usable once ever. So good that they could seriously mess things up, like letting the party slay Asmodeus at mid-level. Maybe better to make them usable 1/level, then they could be more reasonable.

Have to go now, I'll comment on the rest later.

Can you give a example of how good you think action feats would need to be?

I am also looking for examples if anyone makes any feats like this I would like to see it!

I am genuinely opposed to the idea of abilities that give you a one-shot benefit, simply because they tend to ruin the event they are used in (in favour of the party though), and they ruin the character in the long haul (negative for the character).

If I anyway should come with a sugested ability for such a feat (given you exclude epic levels) it could be something like this:

Calling

Benefit: When you utilize this feat you call out for your patron (god), who in turn bestows upon you a powerful blessing. Once used, this feat is lost forever.

DM-note: This blessing could be in the form of an artifact, an extremely powerful buff-spell lasting for 1 full day or a companion creature that will stay around til it dies.

Revive

Benefit: When you die you revive at the nearest church to your faith, with full health. Once used, this feat is lost forever.

DM-note: This is most suitable for a low-magic setting. In a high magic setting this feat is to weak.

Timeshift

Benefit: You can step through time and alter the present. Once used, this feat is lost forever.

DM-note: At any one time you allow your player to jump back in time and end up in the same spot in a previous era. After certain conditions are met, he/she is summoned back to hte present. This could be a very interesting quest-tool.

As you see, I think a feat is worth a lot in the long haul, so spending them like a one-shot-pony should have great effects attached.

I forgot to mention that I like the concept of preparation feats :)

That is a lot easier to balance and keep under control.

Do you have any examples of preparation feats? (Or of any of the types I listed, other than Unknown)

Also, what do you mean +2/+2 feats do you mean +2 to one skill and +2 to another skill, I'm not sure whether or not that is what you mean

totally dig the minor feats: allowing you to develop minor aspects and talents of your character and granting them at later levels is a really good addition.

could you give some examples of interference feats?
double this request for substitution feats. i honestly don't know what you're talking about.

i also agree with the general opinion that action feats are kind of scary.

I do like the idea of unknown feats, but i guess it would only be suitable for a character-dm situation in which there is trust and mutual respect. obviously, not all dnd situations can be this cozy.

For example "perfect strike", automatical critical hit 1/day. Something like that. Preparation could include 1 hour of meditation and practise.

It would be a cool and nice idea to have 1 feat granting multiple options, of which you could only chose one each day. It would be somewhere between martial maneuvers and tactical feats I assume...

A GM I'm familiar with uses Action points. I am planning on doing so soon, and in scavenging his notes, discovered his 'Action Feat' entry. Each Action feat taken adjusts the Action points gained each level. He uses this to reward the taking of some of the suboptimal feats and penalize others, in particular, 'overpowering' chains. EG: there is a '-6AP' feat that allows an extra, specific action to high end fighters, once per day (sounds similar to a weak Flurry of Blows/Whirlwind Attack combo in which you cannot be flanked, 6 feat prereqs!). Both players eligible have taken it, tho both wail how they are set upon. Both gripe about loosing all those AP! No mention in their protestations of the 6 feats, thin conditional use or 3 high stats. I note that the price IS paid at every level.

Minor Feats

I like this if only for the fact that I get to "minorize" several feats. There are a handful I would like to minorize ... lessee sublist!

Acrobatic
Agile
Alertness
Animal Affinity
Athletic
Combat Casting
Deceitful
Deft Hands
Diligent
Endurance
Great Fortitude
Greater Spell Penetration
Investigator
Iron Will
Lightning Reflexes
Magical Aptitude
Negotiator
Nimble Fingers
Persuasive
Self-Sufficient
Skill Focus
Spell Penetration
Stealthy
Toughness

Pretty good list there. Insomuch as the SRD anyhow.

Action Feats

Heh. Maybe you wanna change that to "Sacrificial Feat" or "Temporary" I don't really think this is feat territory. All the examples that could be given will end up things that are either better handled as racial features or storylines. Unundindur's examples are all good - at making my point. The calling thing, the time travel, etc thats all game breaking kinda stuff.

If your gonna break the game the GM should do it, not the players.

Preparation Feats

I really like these! I should make some! Kinda makes the minor feats more ... fledged? Maybe if you combined the concept and gave the above list of feats additional bonuses with prep. Actually thats a great idea.

Preperation Feats (getting rid of the negatice "minor" term).

When you would normally select a feat you may select three preperation feats instead. Preperation feats grant you a minor bonus to a skill, save, or check in addition to their primary bonus. :)

Substitution Feats

Drat. This doesn't work. HP is a function (LVxConBonus+HDrolls).
So this doesn't work as far as the HP thing. What you would really want to do is say "Instead of leveling you can take a substitution feat." period. No level dependant bonuses - no HP from con.

Also I imagine ..but you don't say.. that you loose that levels worth of XP and what not "spend the xp" basically. If you weren't doing it that way - I would recommend it.

Further - these feats could get pretty complicated. I have two sketches to suggest.

Leadership (yep) .
Size: Large (etc, etc, etc).

Interference Feats

Leadership ... and Follower!

I have always thought a follower feat would be totally ... cool. Exactly the thing you give to your cohort... just haven't really figured out what it does.

Actually making interface feats only interface with substitution feats is not a terrible idea. Gives more control over them.

Unknown Feats

Yeah ... don't. If you actually did this in a game I would like to hear about it.

I have played a game where we sat down at the table and the GM passed out character sheets that were just the descriptions of the characters. We had listings on the attacks section like "powerful fists" and "your father's sword" but no numbers (except 42 apples, etc). That was fun, but it was a gag not a game mechanic. Great fun. Not mechanical.
