This is an idea, you can use magic like in Magic The Gathering cards. You can prepare spells up to your spell capacity (to prepare multiple copies of a spell you need to know multiple copies of that spell), non-prepared spells are discarded. You also have mana/day of different colors (black, blue, green, red, white) and can use it to cast the spells. After a spell is cast it is discarded. There may be some ways to prepare discarded spells by casting another spell. Sorcerers/wizards can learn any spells, and can choose the colors of mana at each level, sorcerers have more power but wizards can learn more spells and can have a spellbook. Divine casters automatically know all the spells of the levels they can cast that are in their class list (and cannot learn any more spells without the use of feats), for clerics can depend on alignment/deity, colors of mana can depend on such things as those things as well, and clerics can spontaneously cure/harm with mana of any color without discarding prepared spells, druids can summon nature's ally spontaneously. There can be new feats for learning new spells (in addition to the ones learned at every level), more mana/day of chosen colors, learning 2 more copies of a spell you already know 1 copy of, improved spell capacity (you can prepare more spells in one day, but you still need the correct mana to be able to cast it) ,etc. Also the spells can be colored, single-colored and multi-colors, these are a example of some spells there can be: Black: necromancy spells, negative energy spells, etc. Blue: counterspell, illusions, etc. Green: spells having to do with nature, etc. Red: damaging spells, etc. White: healing spells, protection from (color/school/alignment), remove enchantment, protection spells, etc. There can also be spells for affecting other spells as they are cast (your own or other people's spells), spells with variable mana costs ("X" spells), spliceable spells (similar to "splice with Arcane" in Magic The Gathering cards), spells that deal with prepared/discarded spells, and other things.
