new method for level loss [Archive] - Wizards Community

I was looking at some recent arguments about raise dead and how easy it is to come by. (with RAW) I was thinking of this as an alternative to standard level loss from raise dead and/or energy drain and wondering what everyone else thought.

When you lose a level, you don't actually lose a level, but you are considered 1 level higher for purposes of gaining XP. In other words, from this point onwards, XP is harder to come by. So a 10th level character who has been raised from the dead twice is considered to be 12th level when the DM is handing out XP.

This makes death something which can be overcome, but gives a very real and permanent detriment to letting it happen. For normal energy drain, the effects can be reversed by restoration, so it's not too bad. For raise dead, it can provide enough of a deterrent that after a half dozen deaths, characters reach the point where the fights aren't worth the XP anymore and they start to retire (thus, all the adventurer driven inns, churches, and merchant houses).

I have no idea what the real consequences of this are, so comments please.
