Not related to my magic system (though compatible), I thought it was an interesting concept that created more average curves.

You take your modifier, halve it, add +1 die (because you can always roll 1d20 even if you have only a +1, 0, or even negative modifier..) and add or subtract from the total based on modifier.

For example, the dog whisperer has 14 ranks in handle animal and 14 charisma.

That's a total of +16 modifier=8d20, plus the auto 1 die.

So the dog whisperer rolls 9d20, takes the best result, and adds +2 to the best result's roll for handle animal checks.

It's better for netgames because in rl you're going to be rolling alooot of dice. That tends to happen alot when I edit the system. Infact once I made a d6 system where to implement in rl you would've needed to stop at family dollar and buy ten bucks worth of dice LOL..

So, original system you'd have 1d20 + 16 = 17~36, with avg = 26.5
Your system would make it 9d20 = 9~180 with avg = 94.5.
Not only you made it more complicated, you made it rediculously large. How is this going to work?

I think you misunderstood.

Roll 9d20, and take the best roll. giving a number between 1-20 and then add 2. for a final result of 3-22.

Im not a fan of this system, because it will put a max on your skill checks of 22, which is easily obtainable by specialized characters even from level 1.

It will only put a max if I let it, I mean I expect no DC to be greater then 24 under this system, granteed that'll be fairly easy to accomplish with a feat or two. But I could make exceptions.

For example unlocking a very top of the market deadbolt, DC 22 disable device.

Even if the rogue has +4 mod intelligence and has skill focus (disable device), that still requires a DC of 14, granteed if you're rolling that many d20s you can probably make it. I just did it so that levels don't seem so outrageously differant interms of ability.

A level 1 rogue could theoreticaly pick the lock too, but you'd trust the level 10 rogue a hellevu lot more.

Under normal dnd, the only chance is a level 1 characters rolls a 20. 5% (Less if you consider crit fumbles) vs a bell-curve.

youi would have to rewrite every skill DC so that only in very rare situations is a DC above 24. That seems like a ton of work, with very llittle benefit.

If you do plan to do this, check out shadowrun 4th edition or any other d6 system, as this is essentially what your doing. Shadowrun is the one im familiar with and know it works.

Just a quick note: skill checks in d20 are not subject to the automatic failure or success on a natural 1 or 20. Only attack rolls and saving throws are. :)

I agree with Krusk. Also, your campaign will never go epic then? Having a max at 22 doesn't make sense. You will have to redo skill DC as Krusk said. Especially, you will have to reinvent trap DC. That's not that easy to balance w/ your new system
