I wanted to create a character who was blind, but still had the ability to "see".
If a backstory would help anybody, I can post it.

Unnamed Trait [Trait]
Through special magical rituals you have blinded yourself in order to gain, the extrodinary ability to use nonvisual senses.
Benefit: You gain Blindsight to a range of 30 feet, as detailed on page 290 of the DMG.
Drawback: You are blind and inccur all the drawbacks, as detailed on page 300 of the DMG.
Special: If you gain normal sight in any way, you lose the ability ganted by this

I left the roll-playing ideas pert out because it is being created to fit a very specific character idea.

Please tell me what you think and give me some suggestions on creating a more ballenced version.

What is the range of the blindsight?

Also, blindsight is a very powerful ability, so depending on the range that it grants, this could be a very overpowered trait.

I edited the range into my first post.

yes indeed, in one of the old class books there was a feat that granted blindsight in a 5 feet range... and you needed 18 wisdom and blind fighting as prereqs...

so leave the range up to 5 or 10 feets and will be fixed.
