~No Magic world; Magic Weapons? [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-02-07, 11:45 AM ~So I've been creating this custom world based on most of Tolkien's designs and thoughts. It's going to be near no magic, without any offensive spells or anything, just some healing and stuff like that. A problem came up with weapons and with gold.

~For gold there is just so much money with not so much magic items. Ifound a variant that one person used that would to be reducing average gold by about 25% and letting feast be chosen at every odd level and letting them gain an ability boost at every even level. This was expressed in Design and Development article titled, Development doesnt like much part 2. That should solve that.

~For crafting I came up with a certain system using the craft skill to make "magic" items. These items are just so greatly crafted that they provide bonuses on atk and dam. The system is expressed here for weapons:
+1 equivilents: Craft DC 25, minimum ranks in Craft: 6
+2: DC 28, min ranks: 9
+3: DC 31, min 12 ranks
+4: DC 34, min 15 ranks
+5: DC 37, min 18 ranks
~For any weapon with a special quality they PC"s will have to do some sort of special task.
~For armor I'm going to wait and see if anyone approves or disagrees with what im going with here.

~I got the idea from whenever Tolkien says or emphasizes how strong Dwarven Mail was or an Elven blade.

06-02-07, 03:12 PM Well, there's also the other side that anything magical or super special awesome costs a lot. As per the Tolkein description that a mithril chain shirt was worth about as much as the property of an entire country.

Note that in LotR, basically every hero had a more or less magic weapon - Gandalf's Orcrist was magical, Sting was glowy-magic, and the hobbits had some ancient swords, originating in Numenor, IIRC.

It was just, that elves and other smiths wrought inherently magical stuff... just like the elven cloaks and bread. It was just infused with their very own magic, because the elves were magical, while dwarves used exceedingly rare and expensive metals, that were close to magic (Mithril).

Just keep it magic, don't worry, and just adjust your descriptions. Don't say enchanted sword, say "elven masterpiece". And name everything, giving it more gravitas.
