What do you think of this:

With One-Handed melee weapons, you get attacks as usual.
With Light melee Weapons, you gain one additional attack with the lowest BAB.
With Two-Handed melee weapons, you lose the attack with the lowest BAB (min. 1 attack).

This stacks with everything, like using two weapons (the bonus attack only aplies to the main weapon) or haste.

Because it's the last attack that gets a change, the whole thing has not that much of an impact to overall game balance, because usually, this attack rarely gets a hit. But it would make using two-handed weapons not that much the only obvious choice for front-line fighters than it is now.

not a big fan of this system really, since you are allowed to make an attack with any weapon with any attack... what is to keep someone from useing a light weapon to get teh additinal attack and then usign a 2handed weapon to make the attack. What about someone wielding daggers and wanting to make ranged attacks with them, or mixing 2 handed, one handed, ranged, and light weapons in on one full attack.

Plus, this would make per-attack damage much more powerful for light weapons. Rogues (who probably are already using light weapons) will get even more sneak attack damage per round. And if he's using two weapons, then he gets two extra attacks...

You'd actually get weaker between BAB +5 and BAB +6, if wielding a light weapon. No reason given for it, other than balance.

As-is, there are already good reasons for all 3 weapon types, depending on what kind of character you play. A two-handed weapon is no the best choice for a tank. A one-handed weapon is, so you can hold a shield. High dex characters will want to take weapon finesse, and hence they will use a light weapon. Etc. Or some characters don't have the proficiency.

In fact, with all the special things certain weapons can do, it seems most weapons in the PHB have a niche. Granted, some niches aren't all that useful. But for most weapons I could say, "If someone wanted to do X, that would be the weapon to use." There's crit multiplier (CdG), finessability, trip capability, concealability (dagger), throwability, disarming, damage, ranged weapons, number of hands, etc. Want the most trip attacks you can get? So basically you're better off fighting with a long sword in two hands than with a greatsword once you hit BAB +6.

Also light weapons get considerably weaker as you gain new iterative attacks. As stated, a shortsword at level 5 grants attacks of +5/+5, where at level 6 it grants attacks of +6/+1/+1, which is actually worse.

A bad system to say the least.

The last argument indeed has a point. It was just a first guess how to do it and apparently, it doesn't work.

Modifiers to Initiative seem pointless to me, because they only have a meaning in the first round.

OK, so don't even apply the rule until BAB is 6+; that fixes that problem. How does that change the way the rule gets used in play?

so at level 10 you have +10/+5/+5 at level 11 you have +11/+6/+1/+1 not sure which is better, I think I would rather have 3 attacks with a good chance to hit than 2 attacks with a good chance and 2 attacks with little chance.

Also what happens if you use a light weapon, for your 1st attack and a 2 handed weapon or one handed for the remainder
