| Jaerom Darkwind03-22-04, 05:00 PM | I don't have UA (yet), but I was wondering if someone could quickly explain the concept of paragon races to me. From what I've read, it seems that they're similar to the template classes offered in Savage Species, providing additional racial abilities in exchange for ECL, except that they also possess racial HD. Is this correct? What is the normal number of racial levels in one of these classes? |
| ids the bum03-22-04, 05:08 PM | That's not entirely accurate. The paragons are classes, and they are three levels long. Each one (one for each base race, plus orc, half-dragon, and tiefling) gives the character who takes it a special ability or two, and an ability bonus of +2 to either the race's most important score or (for the human) any score. In my opinion, they're alright, but would be best used for NPC's. Sorry if I bursted your bubble... |

| JoAT03-23-04, 09:40 PM | I rather like them, myself - alot of people have been refering to Paragon classes as 'prestige classes with only a racial requirement', but I do prefer to look at them as a sort of advancement by hit dice for PC races. If you;d like a closer look at them, try here. (http://www.montecook.com/arch_stuff48.html) As for the power aspect, people seem to go between 'too powerful', and 'too weak', which says to me that it's about right... |
| sciborg203-23-04, 09:41 PM | one of my favorite parts, though I wish the levels went beyond 3. |
| Soulmage03-24-04, 11:11 AM | I don't know. . . I like them the way they are. A 10th level paragon human just doesn't seem right to me. |

One of my players is looking at taking it - he'll be a human Ftr1/Wiz6/Spellsword10 at 17th level, and from everything we can figure, he'll be better off all around if he takes the 3 levels of human paragon than if he takes any other combination of classes. Compared to, say, Eldritch Knight he'll get better skills, better hit die, same spellcasting progression, 1 less BAB, a wide-open feat rather than just a fighter or metamagic feat, and a +2 to any stat. Anything beyond three levels can probably be filled in with prestige classes, though I do like to give things with an ECL of more than three an amount of Paragon levels equal to their standard ECL... And I do have one ECL 0 race with about 27 paragon levels that I'm working on... |
| Jaerom Darkwind03-25-04, 09:30 PM | Well, if you really want more paragon levels, there's always... the paragon template. :smirk: |
| Nuntius12808-16-04, 09:11 PM | Praises and salutes the Paragon template. Ahh... screw you Tarrasque... |
