| Drath'ri03-20-06, 05:12 PM | Has anyone ever created parry rules? i dont exactly know how it would work but parring during combat seems like a good idea so if you have ever made them can you please post them or at least link me to them? thank you in advance |
| mrurbanitesmiley03-20-06, 06:41 PM | I implemented a parry mechanic for a class ability of a class I was tooling around with. Basically, as an immediate action after an attack hits, but before damage is rolled, you can make a free attack with an AC of their attack. If you hit, you roll damage, and gain DR/- equal to the amount of damage you rolled. It was limited to a number of uses/day. If you want to work that mechanic into a feat, feel free, although it might be overpowered. |
| Kalis Atrud03-20-06, 07:10 PM | The most commonly used parry mechanics are(in no order): 1. Fighting Defensively(available to all) 2. Full Defense(available to all) 3. Combat Expertise/Superior Expertise(requires Int 13+) 4. Two Weapon Defense tree- though the fact that they all add a shield bonus kind of sucks. No stacking 5. Weapons with the defending enchantment(requires gold) 6. Hitpoints represent near misses and close blocks unless they drop you to zero or less 7. Houserules made on the theory that more dice rolling is more heroic |
| narukagami03-20-06, 08:50 PM | Parrying already exsists in the D&D mechanics. Including what Kalis pointed out, you also could be more creative on combat descriptions on the 'miss' end. What do you think your doing when its not your turn? Standing in place hoping your opponent will swing away from you insted? |
| drakoru03-21-06, 05:12 AM | Buy Dragon Magazine n°301, and check out the article that begins at page 33! Here you will find the OFFICIAL parrying rules. |
| HerbalTea03-21-06, 07:33 AM | Once per round, a defendant can make an attack roll against the attacker (not an AOO). If they equal or beat the attackers attack roll, the attack fails. If they fail, the attack goes through as normal and the defendant has a -2 to AC for the next round. |
| Flamewarrior03-21-06, 11:24 AM | Drath'ri: check The Waking Lands (http://www.wakinglands.com), Combat (Variant) section. There are the best parrying rules I've seen to date, because they include consideration of side-effects, and, based off Dragon Magazine's ruling, but taken much farther. |
| Mnky03-21-06, 12:18 PM | In the seafarer's handbook there are rules for parrying, and riposting. |
| SwiftFox03-21-06, 12:24 PM | I tried to impliment a parry mechanic in a survival horror D&D game once, this is what I used : The parry is a variation of the ‘defence roll’ optional rule given in the DMG. A combatant (henceforth referred to as the defender) must declare he will parry before his opponent makes his attack roll. When that opponent makes his attack/s, instead of attempting to equal or exceed the defenders AC, he must equal or exceed the result of an opposed attack roll (parry). The defender may attempt to parry any number of attacks per round, however each additional parry after the first incurs a cumulative –5 penalty. Only melee attacks can be parried, and a non-reach melee weapon or shield must be nominated to parry with. The defender incurs a penalty to parry attempts equal to –4 per size category his weapon or shield is smaller than his opponent’s weapon. The defender gains a bonus to parry attempts equal to 20 – the threat range of the weapon used to parry, or the AC bonus of the shield used to parry. A shield used to make a shield bash only grants a bonus to parry if the defender has the improved shield bash feat. A defender who is fighting defensively, using a full defence action, using combat expertise or the two weapon defence feat adds the AC bonus gained to parry attempts. A defender denied his dexterity bonus to AC cannot parry. Feats : several feats affect the way a parry functions : Riposte Prerequisite : Combat Expertise. Benefit : on a successful parry, the defender may retaliate immediately against his opponent with a melee attack from the weapon or shield used to parry. Normal : a successful parry deflects a single melee attack. Special : can be taken as a bonus fighter feat. Improved Parry Prerequisite : Combat Reflexes. Benefit : the defender incurs a cumulative –5 attack penalty only for additional parries against the same opponent. Normal : each additional parry after the first incurs a cumulative –5 attack penalty. Special : can be taken as a bonus fighter feat, or can be taken as a bonus monk feat. Parry Focus Prerequisite : Base Attack Bonus +1. Benefit : a defender gains a +2 bonus to all parry attempts. Special : can be taken as a bonus fighter feat. Deflect Thrown Weapons Prerequisite : Combat Expertise. Benefit : attacks from thrown weapons can be parried. Normal : only melee attacks can be parried. Special : can be taken as a bonus fighter feat, or can be taken as a bonus monk feat. Deflect Projectiles Prerequisite : Deflect Thrown Weapons. Benefit : ranged attacks made from projectile weapons can be parried. Normal : only melee attacks can be parried. Special : can be taken as a bonus fighter feat. Dual Defence Prerequisite : Two Weapon Fighting. Benefit : the defender may reduce the cumulative penalty for multiple parry attempts to –2 by alternating between both held weapons/shields. Normal : each additional parry after the first incurs a cumulative –5 penalty Special : can be taken as a bonus fighter feat. Greater Parry Prerequisite : Base Attack Bonus +6, Improved Parry. Benefit : the defender may take 10 for his parry roll, though he must declare he is doing so before his opponent makes his attack roll. Normal : a parry is rolled as an opposed attack roll. Special : can be taken as a bonus fighter feat. WEAPON Swordbreaker : This is a new exotic melee weapon that uses the following stats : range name size cost dmg(S) dmg(M) critical increment weight type Swordbreaker 1H 15gp 1D4 1D6 x2 --- 8 lbs bludgeoningSpecial : On a successful parry attempt against a bladed weapon, the wielder may attempt to either sunder or disarm the parried weapon with the swordbreaker, without provoking an attack of opportunity. Swordbreakers do double damage when used to sunder bladed weapons. |
| StMage03-21-06, 12:48 PM | Devoted Defender Prestige class has a Ref. save / DC 20 to stop a melee atttack from hitting his charge. It could be house ruled to be a feat or something, so that you could defend yourself better. |
| Rohano03-25-06, 07:49 PM | Arcana Evolved also has parry rules |
| BladeMage_103-25-06, 08:33 PM | I know this is annoying (the "Use the RAW" replies) but I'd say you can use your own parrying rules through description. Whenever a player uses the 'Attacking defensively' or 'Total Defense' options, every missed attack is a parry (or describe it this way). Also, you could do this: During an opposing creature's turn, a player may decide to attempt a parry by rolling an opposing attack roll made against that creature's attack roll (highest wins of course). However, upon the next turn the player recieves a -2 penalty per attack parried (stacking) on his attack rolls that round (or next round). Otherwise, what they said. |
