I'm thinking of using a variant I thought of a couple of days ago in our next campaign for character creation. Basically, what I want to do is encourage players to play characters with lower ability scores than they might be used to. The way that I intend to do this is to recommend that the characters be created using the point buy method. The twist is that I want to give them a choice of getting more points to buy their ability scores at the expense of having a level adjustment. The question is how many points added to the point buy are worth a level adjustment?

The way I figure it, right now, a 25 point buy would have no level adjustment. What I'm trying to determine is how many more points would be worth a +1 level adjustement, a +2 level adjustment, or a +3 level adjustment. Any ideas?

Would a 28 Point Buy be worth a +1 level adjustment?

Would a 32 point buy be worth a +2 level adjustment?

If so, would a 37 point buy be worth a +3 level adjustment?

Or, would a 43 point buy be worth a +4 level adjustement?

25-28 should be the same, no LA needed

32 should not require a LA either, but the CR of the party probably improves by 1 at least.

Without burning too many braincells in the process, I'll just say that a 50PB probably warrents a CR bump of +2.

We know form the improving monster section of the rules that going from 'standard' to elite is +1 CR to a monster. Standard is 11,11,11,10,10,10 or 15 points. The elite array is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 or 25 points. So, based on that the quick answer would be 10 points per +1 LA.

The Hobgoblin is a +2 CON +2 DEX and +1 LA race. You could buy +2 to each of a pair of 14's and have a couple of points left over, but if you wanted to min/max two scores you wouldn't have enough points to raise two 16's to 18's.

I would say 10 or 12 points is about right.
