Question,

When applying a Prestige Class to a Gestalt, which class is stopped? The main one or the secondary one?

If you have main and secondary, I would say the secondary. Other than that it is whatever the player wants to stop.

I think I will have main and secondary classes though... the main will go up to 20 and the other can be altered at will.

I'd pretty much insist that there's a primary class to prevent a lot of potential abuse.

If you force 20 levels in the primary class how do you handle Gesalt PrC's? (Other then just not allowing them.)

You mean things like the Mystic Theurge that aren't allowed in gestalt campaigns anyway?

Umm... last I checked there is no primary or secondary class in a Gestalt. Both are considered equal.

Also as I understand it, you're free to choose how you multiclass, so it would be your decision which class to abandon in favor of the PrC. You should even be able to alternate if you wish.

if you don't allow classes like that, then I can't do this:
wizard 3/ cerebremancer 10 / mystic theurge 7
psion 3/ cleric 10/psion 7

casts/manifests: wizard 20/psion 20/cleric 17

Yeah... While cunning, that is right out.

I mean PrC's discussed in Unearthed Arcana under the gestalt section. Basicly a PrC that is crazy in both requirements and class features, but that takes up both class "slots" when you advance it (ie, instead of Wiz 10/Clr 10 you would just get Mystic Theurge 1, or what ever - did that make sense?).

Yes, but check out page 73 again. Top of the right hand collum.

A gestalt character can't combine two prestige classes at any level.
<snip>
Prestige classes that are essentially class combinations-such as the arcane trickster, mystic theurge and eldritch knight- should be prohibited if you are using gestalt classes...

(edit) Damn... hit the button too fast...

ANYway. So those classes are just too much to throw into a gestalt game anyway. I just wouldn't have them available or maybe (for arcane trickster) remove the caster progression. Kind of a case by case basis really.

As for a wizard cleric going into MT? Stopping the turning advancement and taking d4 hit points instead of d8s for the same casting as continuing the wizard-cleric levels? Doesn't sound like a good plan to me.

... stone_dog, you and saether are talking about two entirly seprate things. The Gestalt PrCs s/he mentions don't actually exist as of yet - these are classes that occupy both class 'slots', and grant abilities comparable with the gestalted class, only limited to one class - a good example of what such classes may look like would be the classes from the epic level handbook, or something like a dragon disicple with all good saves, size improvment, full BAB and near-full spellcasting...

Exactly, in this case a better example would have been to rewrite MT to be a true gestalt prestige class and present it... but I'm to lazy to do that since I would never use it. I can't think of anything right off the top of my head, but maybe someone else can...

Ok, ideas for a Gestalt Mystic THeurge...

well, it has to offer something that the core advancement woudl not. So...

huh, first thing that popped into my mind shoudl be enough wiht out any changes. I think people woudl take the HD loss of not being a cleric-wizard to get this:

"Synergy: every level in this class gives a +1 bonus to effective caster level of spells for the divine and arcane spellcasting classes that qualified for this prestige class and are advanced by the dual spell casting progression. If more than oen of either or both class types qualifies you for this clas, select only one of each to gain this ability"

tired, so it might need the legalese tweaked.so a gestalt who took 5 levels of cleric-wizard, who then took 10 levels of this Gestalt PrC, woudl cast spells as a 15th level character, except that spell power would be level 25.

disadvantages: class features do not advance (Wizard feats, tuirning), lower BaB, lower Fort saves
