hey guys,

I've been playing in a gestalt campaign, but wanted to make sure I was right on one point.
in unearthed arcana, it says that you pick two classes at each level and choose the best attributes, so:
1. can you pick any two classes or is it just one combo, or do you countpicking two different combos as multiclassing?
2. it says to pick the best attributes of each. So, could'nt you be gestalt fighter 1/rogue3/wiz2 and have 1d10+3d6 HD? and wouldnt you have a +3 BAB?
3. I know this is wrong but I want to make sure: when are a first level fighter/paladin1 and on second level you do this: fighter1/ninja/pally 2 would you get the first lev ninja abilities or the second lev ones?

thanks,

1. can you pick any two classes or is it just one combo, or do you countpicking two different combos as multiclassing?

Pick any two classes for each 'level'. Use the best BAB, Saves, etc from each. Each class gets their full 'class features' for that level. At each level, only 1 of the classes can be a prestige class.

2. it says to pick the best attributes of each. So, could'nt you be gestalt fighter 1/rogue3/wiz2 and have 1d10+3d6 HD? and wouldnt you have a +3 BAB?

Depends on in what order you gained the classes, however, it look slike it should be 1d10 +2d6 (fighter/rogue level 1, rogue/wizard levels 2 and three). Fighter/rogue would give you fort +2 Ref +2 will +0 and bab +1, rogue2/wizard 1 would give +1 more Ref and +2 will, rogue 3/wizard 2 would give +1 BAB, and +1 fort for a total of:

1d10 + 2d6 HP (+3xCON bonus), BAB +2, Fort +3 Ref +3, Will +3. You also gets lots of other neat abilites. Character level would be 3, and Caster Level would be 2.

As you can see, Gestault characters don't get hugely powerful, but is fun.

Jus one more question...

Do you get the second and third level wizard abilities, or the first and second?

Wehn you make a gestalt character, you really have to make them level by level, slow as molasses, to get everything right.

Once you have done it a dozen tiems, then speed up.

Look at your first level abilities., You get them all. Take the best save, BAB, skills points, and hit dice. That is the easy part. Then take all the extra abiliteis like spellcasting or feats.

For second level do the same.

Yes, with this build you woud get full wizardly spellcasting.

3. I know this is wrong but I want to make sure: when are a first level fighter/paladin1 and on second level you do this: fighter1/ninja/pally 2 would you get the first lev ninja abilities or the second lev ones?I'm going to try to explain this in a different way and maybe it will make things a bit clearer for you.

Each level you choose two classes, Class A and Class B. A///B So you might have a 3rd level character that looks like this:

Rogue 1/Fighter 2 /// Wizard 3

Side A is a multiclassed Rogue 1 and Fighter 2. Side B is straight Wizard 3. Now some people may differ on this, but I keep running totals of saves and BAB seperately for each side to make leveling up easier, and just use the highest of each.
Side A would have BAB +2, Fort +3, Ref +2, Will +2.
Side B would have BAB +1, Fort +1, Ref +1, Will +3.

This character would have BAB +2, Fort +3, Ref +2, Will +3 (taking the best each of BAB, Fort, Ref, Will). First level skills would use rogue skill points, then 2nd and 3rd level would be 2+Int (fighter and wizard get same skill points).

I hope that clears things up for you.

With the build you said (f1/w2/r3) you'd only get wizard level 1 and 2 abilities, since the wizard part is only 2nd level. For any class, you only get the special abilities of that class that are based either on class level, or on Total Character Level (pretty rare, but exists). Also remember that most arcane caster levels will stack with each other for figuring out Caster level (but not other things like spell lists, spells per day, etc), but they will not stack with Divine classes, and vice versa. Now... if you choose two Arcane classes for the same level (ie, wiz/sorc or such), that only counts as a single Caster Level.

So, in the theoretical build of Wiz 1, Sorc2, Cleric1, you'd have a Caster level of 2 for arcane spells, 1 for Divine spells, have to choose and memorize spells as a 1st level Wizard, have 2nd level sorcerer spells/spells per day, and 1st level cleric. Overall, you're only a 2nd level character and would have D6+D8 +2xCon hit points. Identical abilities from two different classes do not stack. So, with the above example, you would only have a single familiar, a Druid/ranger would only get a single animal companion, etc. Now, this gets a bit more confusing since some abilities do stack. Basically, things that give a bonus, will give a bonus (such as sneak attack from two different classes), but things that are 'static', don't. Really, it comes down to GM decision on a lot of the 'iffy' stuff.

My GM House Ruled that we could pick a Primary Class and a Secondary Class as our Gestalt Class. If we changed that combo we took like replaced the Primary or Secondary class with a Tertitiary class we take multiclass penalty. Unless one of those three class was our races favored class.
