| Avatar of Kokusho11-27-07, 07:18 AM | My DM strongly dislikes the fact that certain warlock invocations have durations of 24 hours. Therefore, he is thinking of houseruling that I can only have one invocation that has a duration in effect at any given time. Since they're at-will anyway, I don't mind TOO much, but... What do you think? |
| TarlSS11-27-07, 07:43 AM | Your DM is failsauce. Warlocks, if anything, are balanced as is. Wizards, clerics and any Vancian type spell casting class will pretty much own a warlock so hard it's not even funny. Warlocks are only great after maybe 6 or 7 encounters a day, something that honestly, doesn't occur very often. Maybe he's trying to pull some kind of lowmagicsettingbutitsstillD&D nonsense. That's the only way I could really construe Warlocks being in anyway overpowered. |
| Avatar of Kokusho11-27-07, 07:48 AM | Maybe it's the fact that at the first sign of trouble, I tend to go invisible and stay that way till I blast something? IDK, I think the durations are balanced by the fact that warlocks get so few invocations in the first place... |
| Eldritch_Lord11-27-07, 07:57 AM | You're perfectly correct on the balance thing--if you only get 12 powers in your entire career, while a sorcerer can learn 40-something spells, yours had better be good. Maybe your DM's getting annoyed by the invisibility routine, but that's no reason to nerf the warlock. Can he not include enemies with see invisibility or other divinations? Heck, he could even include an enemy warlock with the same strategy and have you two try to take each other out while the battle rages around you. (That would be cool.) There are many ways of dealing with invisibility that don't involve a nerf; an arcane caster with a wand of invisibility could do the same thing you're doing, and he's not nerfing wizards or wands, is he? |
| Avatar of Kokusho11-27-07, 08:04 AM | No, he's not...in that party, we have NO other spellcaster, and I'm the wand-monkey myself. He tried to use clerics with invisibility purge once, but they couldn't keep up with me, as the enemy in question thought that I was a sorcerer (warlocks are decidedly uncommon in that world) and yelled out "Tell the clerics to find the spellcaster!" Seeing as that a couple of days before I had gotten cursed by a bunch of clerics, I ran like hell... |

You do remember that activating an invocation is a standardaction that provokes an AoO and has a chance to fail if you're hit, right ? |
| Avatar of Kokusho11-28-07, 07:39 AM | Kinda hard to op from sixty feet away.... |
| Salla11-28-07, 11:32 AM | A definite needless nerf. |
| Beware of Kobold11-28-07, 12:18 PM | your DM is very obviously inexperienced and possibly unreasonable. invisibility is a strong power and its meant to be, but its only strong against certain opponents. Some DMs populate their games exclusively with humanoids and this is a mistake. Many monsters, such as animals, spiders, dragons, eyeless plants, outsiders, etc. have abilities that completely negate invisibility or at least make it weaker, so if all your DM throws at you is humans and orcs and dark elves of course invisibility is going to seem overpowered. If he does nerf your powers, then ask to remake as a druid... and become EXTREMELY familiar with the grappling rules. When his pinned and helpless BBEG is having his lungs slowly crushed by a polar bear, ask him if he still thinks the warlock is overpowered. |
| RobbyPants11-29-07, 02:12 PM | Beware of Kobold is right. The more simple the game, the more powerful invisibilty becomes. Against mooks and those caught unprepared, invisibility is pretty powerful. Other than that, anyone with half a brain who lives in a world with invisibile magic-users will come up with ways to thwart it. Even something as simple as flour will make an invisible person visible. Plus, how abusable is it, really? If you're using your Eldritch Blast or using any other invocations to target opponents, then the invisibility will wear off, and you have to spend your next standard action to use it again. Thus, if you want to keep attacking, you'll be visible half of the time. It's hardly broken. |
| runestar12-02-07, 10:31 PM | I think your DM misses the point. Those invocations are 24 hour durations exactly because they can be used at will. If their duration was just say, 1 minute/caster lv, I would simply refresh them every chance I get. Extending its duration simply does away with this redundancy, nothing more.:) |
