no, a psicrystal is considered a creature of the construct type, not a magic/psionic item.

could you have an intelligent item as a item familiar and if so? What is the difference between an intelligent item and a psicrystal? Both are constructs types I think.

what about a homonculous?

I know somewhere in a book that you can turn a homonculous into a familiar. A homonculous is a construct or at least it can be.

Anyway, i care too little to look it up....it was just a thought.

3. Would it be possible to have a construct as an Item Famaliar? It would seem most constructs meet the requirements and I think it would be quite enjoyable to play a character bonded to a construct.

3. Hmm. I haven't given that any thought. Since a construct is a creature, I'd almost certainly say the rules say "no" but I would love to hear how it worked in someone's game and maybe I'll try it myself.

Straight from the creator of the Item Familiar feat.

An psicrystal is a creature of the construct type. An intellegent item is not a creature but an object.

From the 3.5 srd

INTELLIGENT ITEMS
Magic items sometimes have intelligence of their own. Magically imbued with sentience, these items think and feel the same way characters do and should be treated as NPCs.

Intelligent items can actually be considered creatures because they have Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. Treat them as constructs. Intelligent items often have the ability to illuminate their surroundings at will (as magic weapons do); many cannot see otherwise

Unlike most magic items, intelligent items can activate their own powers without waiting for a command word from their owner. Intelligent items act during their owner’s turn in the initiative order.

Any item with intelligence has an alignment. Note that intelligent weapons already have alignments, either stated or by implication. If you’re generating a random intelligent weapon, that weapon’s alignment must fit with any alignment-oriented special abilities it has.

Like a character, an intelligent item speaks Common plus one additional language per point of Intelligence bonus. Choose appropriate languages, taking into account the item’s origin and purposes

You are mistaken an intelligent item Is a creature of the construct type. As would be any item familiar, psicrystal or for the matter any animated object. I wanted to know if you could blend the two.

Psicrystals are in the Monster Section, not the Magic Item section.

There are some ways to get some Constructs as (Wizard) Familiars, but the Item Familiar is for magic items only.

All creatures of the construct type are magical items in the stricted sense of the word

Familiars are magical beast, creatures augented by magic.
Constructs are creatures made by magic.
Improved familiars are magical beast bound by magic.
Antimated objects are in the monster manual and are made by magic, making them constructs. The spell that creates animated objects has an uniform effect making animated objects viable canidates to be placed in the MM.
Golems are construct whos form and abilities vary very little so they are in the MM.
Intelligent items vary to much to be in MM and are DM controled NPC's, so they are in the DMG in the magical item creation section, But they are constructs made by magic.

Intelligent items have alignment, ability scores, and can take thier own actions as can creatures of the construct type. Descibe for me the difference between an item familiar and an intelligent item. As far as I can see there is little difference. They both have special abilities and intelligence. The only difference I can see is that one is bound to a PC/NPC with a feat while the other is not.

So, the question becomes, can I bind the same item to me twice? For example with construct familiar and item familiar Or psicryatal affinity and item familiar?

How about a real debate on this subject instead of arbitrary anwsers, I am not looking for a simple answer but something I can wrap my mind around in a D&D logical sense.

You might be allowed to do it with Improved Familiar rather than Item Familiar.

A Construct is a Creature TYPE. It's a Creature TYPE like Undead. They are not defined as Magic Items but rather most are created with Magic.

A Psycrsytal is a Familiar that is of TYPE Construct. It is a Creature because it is in the Monster Section. It is not a Magic Item because it is not in the Magic Item Section.

Do not use the tenious distinction that since Monsters of Type Construct are usually created by magic, so it should follow that they are themselves Magic Items. If they were Magic Items they'd be in the Magic Item Section. No where officially has it been stated that Golems are magic items.

Descibe for me the difference between an item familiar and an intelligent item.
By the rules an Item Familiar is acquired by the use of the Item Familiar Feat. An Intelligent Magic Item may be created or found. A Psycrysal is a Monster as defined in the XPH and is aquired by use of the Psycrystal Affinity Feat.

All said, a Psycrystal is not a permanent magic item of at least 2000 gp value so it is not valid for the Item Familiar feat.

Hmm...Create construct(golem) is a feat, just another form of Magic Item creation feat The construction of a golem has a gold and exp cost just like any other item. the that fact, golem are made slightly differently than standard item, via a different feat, protects them dispels but an antimagic shell will still hedge them out.

I explained early why intelligent items are in the DMG instead of the MM. Golems could just as easily been in the DMG as well. There are books thet help in the cronstruction of them in the DMG.

Intelligent items can actually be considered creatures because they have Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. Treat them as constructs.

a psicrystal is no more a monster than a golem, you make it via a feat like any other construct.

Psycrystal Affinity Feat states that the pet rock must have a minimum value of 100gp but you could easily create you psicrystal out of a 5000gp diamond if you wished.

Gruffmug, why don't you just be honest and say you won't give up until someone says its possible. Actually no need to wait I'll say it, you can. There that make you happy?

I'm sorry fot the sarcastic approach, but it was th easiest way to point out you seem to be shooting down every reason you can't so this. So if your so stuck on doing it, than do it, forget getting permision from other people.

States? Could you please read the Psycrystal Affinity feat -- you're quoting the 3.0 ed Psicrystal rules.

You explained why you think they are. I explained that Magic Items are in the Magic Item section -- an ideal place to put descriptions for magic items.

You are mistaken that an Intelligent Magic Item is a creature -- it is a Magic Item that is treated as a Construct, has all the things listed, etc. You'll note that they're not in the Monster Manual but rather they are in the Magic Item section of the DM. This is because they are Magic Items, not Creatures. A Golem or Animated Object is a Monster -- they're in the Monster Manual. Psicrystals are in the Monster Section of the XPH because they too are Creatures.

A Psicrystal is a Creature; it is created via a Feat. Golems are Creatures also and are also created by use of a Feat. Intelligent Magic Items are Magic Items that are created by use of a Feat but they are Magic Items -- no where does it state that they ARE Monsters. Nowhere does it state that Golems are Magic Items. They can both be Constructs but Magic Items are not Monsters.
