| MythMage09-02-05, 01:10 AM | I'd like some opinions on the following trait. It also serves as a prerequisite for a pyrokinesis feat tree I've been tinkering with, but I'm not quite ready to post the feats at the moment. I may add them soon, however. Firestarter [Trait] You possess a minor form of pyrokinesis that you can use to augment fire effects you create. Benefit: You can produce a jet of flame from your fingertip similar to the "firefinger" option of Prestidigitation. (See Tome and Blood, page 80). As a standard action, you produce a jet of fire up to 1/2 foot long. The flame cannot hurt you, but fires it starts can. You can use the flame to make a melee attack that deals 1 point of fire damage, or you can attempt to hit a flammable item on your target. If you hit the object (such as exposed scroll, light cloth, etc.) it catches on fire and may catch the victim on fire (DM's discretion, depending on the target) Also, you can use the ability to light a torch as a standard action, rather than the normal full-round action. This is a spell-like ability of the Evocation [Fire] school with an effective spell level of zero. Your caster level for this effect is equal to your character level divided by two plus 1. Also, once per day as a free action, you may cause a fire spell, spell-like ability, or supernatural ability of yours to increase in power, raising your effective caster level and any of the ability’s save DCs by +1 for that casting. Drawback: You are not reflexively afraid of fire or being burned. In fact, you find flames mesmerizing and beautiful. You must consciously remind yourself that fire can burn and hurt you, slowing your reflexes when threatened by it. You suffer a -2 morale penalty to AC and saving throws against fire effects and anything that deals fire damage. Roleplaying Ideas: Much like sorcerers, firestarters have an unusual power that manifests, often to surprising result, when the character least expects. The character’s natural link to fire may give one delusions of grandeur, and inspires many to take on the cloak of evoker for maximum control of fire. [Edit: Changed touch attack for 1 fire damage into melee attack for 1 fire damage.] |
| MythMage09-02-05, 07:29 AM | Here's the beginning of the pyrokinesis feat tree I referred to. It also needs reviewing. Fire Palm [General] You have developed your pyrokinesis into an effective weapon. Prerequisites: Firestarter trait, character level 3rd. Benefit: You gain burning hands as a spell-like ability that is usable 3 times per day. Your caster level for this effect is equal to half your character level, to a minimum of 1. Any save DC is Charisma-based. Sword of Fire [General] You have developed your pyrokinesis into an effective weapon. Prerequisites: Fire Palm, Firestarter trait, character level 6th. Benefit: You gain flame blade as a spell-like ability that is usable 2 times per day. Your caster level for this effect is equal to half your character level, to a minimum of 1. Any save DC is Charisma-based. Pyroblast [General] You have developed your pyrokinesis into an explosive weapon. Prerequisites: Fire Palm, Firestarter trait, character level 6th. Benefit: You gain fireball as a spell-like ability that is usable 2 times per day. Your caster level for this effect is equal to half your character level, to a minimum of 1. Any save DC is Charisma-based. |
| CryoSilver09-05-05, 02:19 PM | I shy away from making anything allowa touch attack at will. It doesn't seem like much, but that's a touch attack 1+10d6 for a high level rogue. |
| MythMage09-06-05, 01:42 AM | I shy away from making anything allowa touch attack at will. It doesn't seem like much, but that's a touch attack 1+10d6 for a high level rogue. How would it be if it didn't allow a direct attack, then? The firestarter would still be allowed to try and set things on fire, since that doesn't translate to a chance for a sneak attack. |
| CryoSilver09-07-05, 06:01 PM | Or you could just make it a normal attack, in which case it loses it's appeal for the rogue, who would be just as well off with any other weapon, but doesn't lose its flavor. |
| MythMage09-09-05, 11:31 PM | Okay, I'll just make it a normal attack. Now, what do you think of the beginning of the pyrokinesis feat tree? |
| CryoSilver09-10-05, 09:48 PM | At first glance, it looks alright to me, though if you want my take on it, I'd make the abilities more subtle. Like a Heat Metal instead of Flame Blade and similar swaps, but that's justmy preference. None of the feats seem too overpowered when the CL is equal to just 1/2 character level. |
| MythMage09-11-05, 11:41 PM | I have revised the feat tree, and expanded it into higher levels. Fire Palm [General] You have developed your pyrokinesis into an effective weapon. Prerequisites: Firestarter trait, character level 3rd. Benefit: You gain burning hands as a spell-like ability that is usable 3 times per day. Your caster level for this effect is equal to half your character level, to a minimum of 1st. The save DC is 11 + your Charisma modifier. Sword of Fire [General] You can use your pyrokinesis to create a flame blade. Prerequisites: Fire Palm, Firestarter trait, character level 8th. Benefit: You gain flame blade as a spell-like ability that is usable 2 times per day. Your caster level for this effect is equal to half your character level, to a minimum of 5th. Pyroblast [General] You have developed your pyrokinesis into an explosive weapon. Prerequisites: Fire Palm, Firestarter trait, character level 8th. Benefit: You gain fireball as a spell-like ability that is usable 2 times per day. Your caster level for this effect is equal to half your character level, to a minimum of 5th. The save DC is 13 + your Charisma modifier. Shield of Fire [General] You have developed your pyrokinesis into a mystical shield. Prerequisites: Fire Palm, Sword of Fire, Firestarter trait, character level 11th. Benefit: You gain fire shield as a spell-like ability that is usable 3 times per day. Your caster level for this effect is equal to half your character level, to a minimum of 7th. The save DC is 14 + your Charisma modifier.
