I've not yet purchased UA, but there are a few rules I wish to use. The ones I want to use are based upon the Star wars d20 game:

- Armour as DR
- Class Defense Bonus
- Vitality and wound

I'm not quite sure if there are any differences between the SW version and those in the UA book, anyone care to note the differences. Also, how is Natural armour effected. Does it stay as an AC bonus, or does it become DR?

The Armor as DR system in UA basically halves the Armor Bonus into Armor Bonus and DR (for example, Full Plate, normally a +8 Armor bonus, gives you DR 4/- and +4 Armor Bonus). Natural Armor works in a similar fashion (but with a different fraction).

Oddly, in UA's version, the DR for armor applies to Vitality damage, not Wound damage (as in SW) ... and any critical hits automatically penetrate DR, even if it normally wouldn't (for example, if you land a critical hit on a creature with 15/good DR, you inflict full damage even without a holy weapon).

They recommend that any damage dealt as extra dice (sneak attack, flaming weapons) become only +1 point of damage (per die) on a critical hit, but remain full dice on Vitality damage.

How about shields? Do they remain AC, or do they become Dr as well?

Also, about the class defence; Are their different rates of improvment? In the SW game it was +10, +11, or +12 at level 20. I'm hoping it offeres a bit more difference :P

shields remain AC,a shields job is to block.

they IMPROVE at the same rate.the base is based upon your armor level of the class.

I have to admit, that's a good innovation. Still skeptical, but a step in the right direction.

Wait a minute. Even after all your VP is exhausted, a normal non-critical hit against your WP will NOT be protected by your armor's DR?

Are YOU sure? :uh-huh:

BTW, I do like "successful critical hits bypass armor's DR" rule.

Reasonable.

I may have misinterpretted/misstated.
"Any critical hit automatically overcomes a creature's damage reduction, whether or not the attack could normally have."

The only other noteworthy reference to DR is that "Damage Reduction functions normally, reducing damage dealt by attacks."

This may mean that, if your VP is exhausted, your DR will still apply to non-critical hits, since the Vitality damage essentially 'converts' to Wound damage (the damage is still Vitality, thus reduced, but since there's no Vitality there ... or something). It isn't expressly stated, though.

Interesting they would call it "vitality damage." I thought they would simply say "normal damage," while "vitality damage" is for nonlethal attacks (or any attacks that inflicts only nonlethal damaage).

Speaking of nonlethal damage...

Is it safe to assume that without Improved Unarmed Strike (or 1st level of the monk class), you cannot inflict a critical hit? If you make a successful nonlethal attack on a defender with 0 VP, do nonlethal damage then applies toward WP?
