| sindar09-16-05, 02:54 AM | I need a Quick and balanced defense bonus system that I can add to my D&D game before next session (Sunday). Please help |
| Ranger REG09-16-05, 04:03 AM | I can point you toward d20 Modern (or the Modern System Reference Documents). |
| Rhomphaia09-16-05, 09:26 AM | I developed my own house rule for this, but it is rather complicated. I will post it here for you. Class Defense Bonus I like this system and it seems good, but I think the bonuses are too high. I will use the following table instead. Increase these bonuses by two if you are using this system in a game without armor or increase by one if you do not allow this bonus to function with armor. This bonus does work with armor, but it is reduced by the armor check penalty of armor worn (but not ACP of shields). To maintain balance and not unduely punish those who do not start with armor proficiencies, all classes start at column A. If they give up their highest class armor proficiency (must be done at first level) then they use column B. If they give up their next highest, they use column C, and if they have all the armor proficiencies and give them up, then they use column D. For example, a fighter can choose to give up proficiency in heavy armor to gain Column B, heavy and medium for column C and all three armor proficiencies for Column D. Those with less proficiencies have less to give up, but there is another option. For those who do not have the armor proficiencies, or those that wish to retain them, they may take the improved defenses as feats. This is a very attractive option for arcane spellcasters, needless to say. Level A B C D 01-02 +00 +01 +02 +03 03-05 +01 +02 +03 +04 06-08 +02 +03 +04 +05 09-11 +03 +04 +05 +06 12-14 +04 +05 +06 +07 15-17 +05 +06 +07 +08 18-20 +06 +07 +08 +09 Improved Defense (General [fighter]) Benefit: You use the defense bonus from column B instead of column A. (the table has been provided below). Greater Defense (General [fighter}) Prerequisites: Improved Defense, Base Attack +01. Benefit: You use the defense bonuses from column C. Supreme Defense (General [fighter]) Prerequisites: Greater Defense, Base Attack +02. Benefit: You use the defense bonus from column D. I haven't played far into my game, and no one chose any of these options or the feats yet, but in theory, this does seem balanced to me. |
| caeruleus09-16-05, 11:07 AM | Quick and easy? Here's one I've used. Each character gets a defense bonus of 2 plus half of their base attack bonus. |
| Rhomphaia09-16-05, 11:14 AM | Quick and easy? Here's one I've used. Each character gets a defense bonus of 2 plus half of their base attack bonus. Doesn't that by default unfairly boost classes that already have armor proficiencies? |
| Gilean09-16-05, 11:19 AM | Defense bonus equal to half BAB (or half level for full BAB classes, 1/3 for medium BAB, 1/4 for poor BAB classes, they are almost the same). It is a dodge bonus. It is reduced by armour's check penalty but stacks with everything. |
| caeruleus09-16-05, 08:43 PM | Doesn't that by default unfairly boost classes that already have armor proficiencies? I would hardly call that unfair. |
