| Patrick Draken-Korin11-19-06, 05:14 PM | I've always had a problem with the fact that various races exchange a solo racial HD for a class level even though every racial HD is better than the commoner one. Anyone agree with me, or at least see a similar discrepancy? I've got an answer, though the system is both complicated an not entirely useful. Mainly it's one of those "I don't like the system and I'm going to tinker, even if I can't match the simplicity that already available" things. 1) humanoid racial HD is the exact same as commoners. 2) humanoids can exchange every racial HD for class levels, but by defualt they many only exchange for NPC class levels. 3) non-humanoid creatures (every other type) that have a solo racial HD may exchange thier first racial HD for a class level but not for NPC class levels. What does this mean? a) humans, elves, dwarves, et all are normally commoners, or they can be warriors, adepts, experts and aristocrats. No change there. b) bugbears, lizardfolk, locathah and trogledytes (not to mention all the races in suplementary works) must be rewritten either as commoners, warriors, or both. Great, THAT helps a whole lot. c) under special circumstances, unspecified as of yet, creatures affected by "b" may also exchange racial HD for PC class levels (though even if they met prerequisites, I'd never allow swapping racial HD for prestige class levels). d) NPC classes become humanoid specific. As if anyone cares (a change, but not much of one; no warforged adepts and magewrights, only clerics and wizards. So Cannith did a good job). So, as far as I can see, the only problem with this idea is that I'm spitting on those humanoids that actually have racial HD and forcing rewrites of thier stats. I'm not even certain how or even if this would prove to be unbalancing; with the unspecified circumstances (probably along the lines of some mystical ritual or racial champion) it' not much of an issue, any more than another DM made custom creature. On the other hand swapping humanoid HD for warrior levels means more hit points (admitidly d10 rather than d8 isn't much for average rolls, just 1 point every two HD) increased bab and a good fortitude saves rather than a good reflex save. Skill points remain the same, though racial class skills may prove to be a problem. ------- So is this system really worth it? Probably not. I just really dislike how it's possible for creatures to have a NPC class that is so much less than is avaiable as thier type HD. I doubt I'll implement this, unless I can come up with something better in regards to creatures with to multiple humanoid HD (Maybe a new NPC class?). Any questions? |

Anyone agree with me, or at least see a similar discrepancy? Yeah, I have a problem with this too. My solution is to simply ignore NPC classes. |
