| Gloom of the Night03-07-04, 06:48 PM | Ok i was just wondering what is the ruling for races and thier starting weapon proficencies? In the weapon group varient, you break up the starting proficency by class into a number of groups. But what about race? Example: Elves start out with the following: "Weapon Proficiency: Elves receive the Martial Weapon Proficiency feats for the longsword, rapier, longbow (including composite longbow), and shortbow (including composite shortbow) as bonus feats." So under the Weapon Group variant do you say "Ok you can pick 1 new group? Or one new weapon?" Any ideas? -Gloom |
| Kaardomos03-07-04, 10:13 PM | The racial weapon groups are on page 95: Dwarf: Any dwarf who has weapon group(axe) is also proficient with the dwarven war axe and the dwarven urgrosh. Elf:: All elves automatically have weapon group(bows) and either weapon group(heavy blades) or weapon group(light blades). Gnome: Any gnome who has weapon group proficiency(picks and hammers) is also proficient with the gnome hooked hammer. |

| Greyman03-26-04, 12:45 AM | Halflings do not get bonus weapon groups under this system, because by the core rules, halflings do not get bonus weapon proficiencies. All halflings get, weapon wise, is a +1 racial bonus on attack rolls made with slings and thrown weapons (which does mesh nicely with the weapon group of the same name). They do not get automatic proficiencies with such, hence do not automatically get the weapon group. |

However, in the "old" system, slings and the such were considered to be "simple" weapons that all classes had proficiency with. That is, you didn't *need* to give halflings proficiency with slings, because they had it already. |
| FriendoftheDork03-26-04, 02:46 PM | sob... my wizard isn't proficient with any ranged weapons - only clubs, quarterstaffs and daggers. crossbows don't exist in the campaign. Oh well (fires off another ray of enfeeblement). :b: |
| Pystian03-26-04, 07:59 PM | Anyone else thing Elves starting out with Heavy Blades is a little odd? I get why, I just thing the ramifications are... peculiar. |

Most of which have been grouped as Basic Weapons, the rest are Crossbows. All classes have the proficiencies cut back as part of the Weapon Group system, hence why wizards have to choose from one of two groups. Balancing this, a single feat will expand the character's proficiencies by an entire group, not just a single weapon. If an halfling wishes to take advantage of her racial bonus, all she has to do is select slings and thrown weapons as one of her class's groups, or take a feat to expand the list. Still, all in all, giving halflings the weapon group for free would not be too unballanced. The group itself is quite small, although the exotic list is large. However, keep in mind that halflings get the bonus on any melee weapon with a range increment, not just the normal and exotic weapons from Weapon Group (Slings and Thrown Weapons).Originally posted by Pystian Anyone else thing Elves starting out with Heavy Blades is a little odd? I get why, I just thing the ramifications are... peculiar.Well, unlike halflings, elves always had proficiency with both longswords, rapiers, and all bows, even if their class did not grant such. It's a bit hard to exactly mirror that in the weapon group system without creating an Elven Weapons group. Instead they're made to choose between Heavy and Light blades. The ramifications: elven wizards weilding greatswords. Urrr.... |
| DevaNinja03-28-04, 09:23 PM | That's not a bad idea making an elven group! Here it is! Elven Group Longswords & Rapiers |
| Greyman03-28-04, 10:20 PM | Well, creating custom weapon groups to reflect styles taught by organisations and cultures is a suggested variant. I'd add the Elven Thinblade as an Exotic Weapon for the group. Uh, I think there's a few more such racial weapons in the Complete Warrior, but I don't recall any off hand. |
| Gloom of the Night03-29-04, 11:08 AM | (Doh! missed the racial part, thanks :D ) what about Drow? -Gloom |
