So you have the three different attack progressions. Good - As Fighter Average - As Cleric Poor - As Wizard Any class that has a good progression - chooses to advance good in melee or range and then progresses average in the other. Any class that has an average progression - chooses to advance in both melee and range at an average rate, or use a good progression in melee or range and a poor progression to the other. Any class that has a poor progression - Can choose to progress average in melee or range and poor in the other. It needs some tweaking that is for sure, but tell me what you guys think, maybe choose on a class per class bases as appose to using their base attack. |

Fighter/Barbarian/Paladin/Ranger: Good + Average = power loss Cleric/Rogue/Monk: Average/Average, or Good/Poor = power gain; the monk and low-dex cleric are absolutely going to choose "Melee Good". Also, you upset some PrC balance, allowing these 3/4 BAB classes to qualify for certain PrCs too early. Wizard/Sorc: Average/Poor = power gain: they should be poor/poor. So your idea is a power-down for fighter-types, and power up for all caster types. That is usually the exact opposite of most people's house rule desires... I was thinking something both more and less drastic: You can choose to go the "balanced" route, or "focused". The Focused choice grants +1 to hit with the chosen focus (melee or ranged) and -1 to hit with all other forms (i.e. ranged). No actual change to BAB. The effect is dramatic at low level, less influential at higher levels, but will always be a 2-pt spread. |

| IceFractal12-17-04, 02:07 AM | Monks should get poor/poor? Why? You know that unarmed strike is a melee attack, right? Anyway, if you want more specialization, you could have Kickass and Crappy BAB progressions to go along with the standard Good/Average/Poor ones. Kickass: +1 BAB on most levels, +2 BAB on levels 1,5,10,15,20 - +25 BAB total Crappy: +1 BAB on levels 1,5,10,15,20 - +5 BAB total Now some one with good progression can have either both at good or one at average and the other at kickass, someone with average can have both average or one good and the other poor, and someone with poor can have both at poor or one at average and one at crappy. This probably overpowers fighters that focus on melee attacks only, as well as monks (good melee, poor ranged is better than average/average for most of them), low dex clerics, and even wizards (wizards shouldn't go into melee anyway, so crappy melee/average ranged is a power boost). It is, however, balanced in that it overpowers everyone about evenly. Edit: Just for completeness, you could have two more progressions at the extremes: DBZ and Total Loser DBZ: +1 BAB every even level, +2 BAB every odd level - +30 BAB total Total Loser: +0 BAB every level - +0 BAB total Warning: This is offered just to be ridiculous, do not attempt to use in actual game. |
