Recharge magic and psions [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-18-04, 06:05 PM Do any of you have some tips to use the "recharge magic" option (spells recharge after a certain time) for psions (I just bought the XPH !).

05-18-04, 08:26 PM I do, but it requires an alteration to normal casters using the recharge system as well.

First you lower the amount of spell points and power points given to the Psion and the other spellcasters, preportionately. Then you make spell points recharge at a rate of 1/round.

05-18-04, 09:54 PM The simplest way would be to give a level-based recharge time for power points, based on maximum power level:

L1-2: 1pp/5 rounds
L3-4: 1pp/4 rounds
L5-6: 1pp/3 rounds
L7-8: 1pp/2 rounds
L9: 1pp/round

This means that a psion would recharge much slower than a spellcasting class, but it compensates for the incredible flexibility of psionic powers, and the ability to use powers whose spell counterparts don't have a general recharge time much faster than a spellcaster would.

05-19-04, 01:00 AM I would like to revise my idea just a tad. The amount of points that recharge should be equal to 1/4 your non-epic spellcaster/manifester level (minimum of 1). The limit for the maximum amount of spellpoints to give a class by 20th level should be 17 (the cost of a 9th level power/spell).

After 20th level, just use epic spell slots.

05-20-04, 04:51 AM I didn't misunderstand. I was just trying to ballance a recharge psion with a normal spellcaster. The best way you can do it is to switch one or the other over to using either spell/power slots or spell/power points.

Another way is to determine how many points the power you've manifested costs, roll for recharge time, and gain PP each round of recharge equal to the amount of PP spent, devided by the amount of rounds of recharge time. That too is perfectly ballanced, yet cumbersome.

I have got one other idea. For every 3 PP you spend you must wait 1 round to recover them.

05-20-04, 11:02 AM You don't get spell points or PSPs with recharge. In fact, you get to cast spells or manifest powers in an unlimited fashion (no prep.) The limit isyou just have to wait a period of time before casting or manifesting another spell/power. I would suggest a psion should be similar to a sorcerer (flexibility) and compare powers with similar spells and go from there... The powers of a psion are really no more flexible than a spell caster, so like I said, they are probably more like sorcerers in that regard.
