I'm wondering how well these two systems would play together if a class of items was introduced that replenished power points (like ethers in Final Fantasy).

My girlfriend really hates the Vancian magic system and I really like recharge magic. And until we get a few more players, I'm deciding based on that.

Should I just start using spell points?

yes and no.

you need to be aware that spell points tend to boost the power of a Magic users relitive to the other classes since your typical mage/sor/cler/dru is now close to 100% efficient which is why you need to go with the restriction on casting level

for example

Cure Critical woulnds only restores 4D8+(7 to 15)but for the same cost you can use cure light woulnds (1D8+5 at those levels same level) 7 times (or 7D8+35) (granted it takes 7 spells to get the effect) But now a Druid only needs to memorise a Cure light and their best cure for incombat healing.

for that matter, a wizard can memorise one of each spell that he thinks he might need instead of memorizing 2 copys of fireball.

you also need to figure out how to properly "comp" Sorcerers if you go with spell points because suddenly Wizards become super sorcerers since they can change their spell list as needed. the only bonus the Sorcer gets is that they efectivly get one "free" spellpoint per spell cast that is used strictly to gain a level in spell efect. what we do is simply give bonuse spells based on their Cha modifyer, and thoes spells can be any level that you can currently cast. (which means you can gradualy traid up spells)

Okay... I was gonna give Sorcs a few extra class skills and possibly a d6 hit die anyway.

I'm more interested in recharge magic though. Basically there's no hard limit on spells per day, but when you cast a spell, you lose access to that level of spells until you recharge (with recharge times depending on the spell).

The idea is that I have spellcasters use recharge magic and leave psionics unchanged. I find both systems more interesting than the standard "spell slots per day" business.

Has anybody actually played using recharge magic?

I did for one game, Even the Wizard thought it was way too mutch pie.

the combat basicaly went
COC
icestorm
Fireball
Lighting bolt
Fire arrow
Fireball
fire arrow
Ice missle
fireball
lightingbolt

at which point we basicaly stoped what we were doing because we realised that if the Sorceres was their we would have bascialy had a pair of Gandalfs in the group.

If I were to use the spell point system, I'd first not grant bonus spell slots for high ability scores; the sorcerer doesn't know additional spells for having a higher charisma (though one may argue to add this in, and the problem of inter spellcasting class balance would be solved; it would be schewed everywhere else). Then the wizard has 4 per level, sorcerer has 6 (but they are set).

As for recharge, it frightens me. If you're looking for flavor, go with SP, use vitalizing, and you're good to go.
