Has anyone tried the recharge magic variant in a campaign? I was thinking about using it for one I was going to run soon, but am having doubts about it making magic-using characters even more powerful. In particular I have a feeling the system would become too powerful during epic level play, which is where the campaign is planned to become.

I have found that it works rather well. My players sort of disliked the npc spell caster they annoyed because it could harass them all day long rather then just a few times. The only place I ran into issues was with things like arcane strike. Mostly I liked it, though I don't have much use for sorcerers anymore. :) The other thing that you need to look at (if you care) is psionics. They quickly get out of line balance wise if one recharges and the other doesn't. This can be dealt with a few ways, either drop the magic/psion transparency or suck it up and agree that magic is stronger.

The main thing that was different was I noticed that when I had it effect priests as well as wizards, the party was always at full life after a battle. There was just no reason not to be. Which sort of left me annoyed because it quickly leaves you at a point where they can walk through a town and heal the whole town in a day.

Other then that no I haven't had to many issues with it. I like it because it fits what I think a wizard should be. Someone that gathers up their magic and casts it out but doesn't forget it. Refreshing their memory everyday so they don't lose track of the important details.
Test it out, I had the players in a ancient section of the world when I started my recharge stuff out to test it. It's one of those balance things.

In my game the amount of magic dipping (into classes) increased. In other words in some ways a little magic went a long way to increasing the power of a character.
