| Aldrick04-14-06, 03:00 AM | I want to run a high-powered game for my group (we are used to playing more low-key, "realistic" games). So I'm probably gonna use Recharge Magic.. because I just want the action to keep going, I don't want the PCs to have to stop for any reason (basically). What should I do to keep classes with Ability X/Day abilities in the run? I'm talking Pallies with Smite, Monks with Stunning Fists and Barbarians with Rages. I don't want to deny them their class abilties if it's fight number 6,7,8.....18 for the day :D Thanks for your thoughts and comments. -Aldrick |

E.g. a 15th level Paladin with Extra Smiting has 6 smite attacks. He could theoretically use them in the space of 2 rounds if it really mattered. The same can be said for a monk. A monk has several feats which burn Stunning Fist attempts. Even with these, at high levels, a monk is unlikely to run out of attempts, as he receives a lot. But if it is time based, he has to wait for it to recharge. This problem is avoided, if you set the recharge time really low (like 1-2 rounds). However, this still does not allow a high-level character to use his abilities more often. Maybe this is not a problem for. Rechargable rage is basically just saying unlimited use, but only once per battle. It will be a boon to low-level barbs, and have almost no effect on those high enough level to have 3 or more rages per day, since a normal day of encounters is 3-4 encounters. |

As for the paladin I would probably give the smite attack a recharge time of 10 minutes per smite attack they have. That might seem a lot of smites but that's less evil then being able to toss meteor storms all day. As for the rage, it's not supernatural, but you could probably let them rage as long as they aren't fatigued. So look though the phb/dmg for fatigue recharge times and look into that. Maybe a custume item that lets the barbarian rage more? I'm not sure I wouldn't be inclined to change that all that much. They don't really need rage to stay a viable character. |

I would have the monks recharge slowly over the day. They could blow through them all in a fight but likely don't need too. Just treat them each as different spells for the purpose of recharge otherwise as pheonix knight said you punish the high level characters. |

The Recharge Magic variant rule's been created to grant wizards and other classes that heavily rely on magic a greater endurance all over the day before they need to rest. Fighters, barbarians, paladins and monks simply don't need it in my opinion. I'm experimenting Recharge Magic in my campaign (4th level characters right now), and I have to say that it does all but overpowering spellcasters. It's a bit frustrating to wait that 1d6+1 or 1d4+1 rounds in a fight before casting another spell (especially when you've got only 1 spell slot available for casting, exception made for cantrips....Daze i love you;) ). One last consideration. While it's perfectly normal to me to expect a NPC wizard to cast at last 1 spell per encounter, it seems a little too good to allow a paladin (barbarian) to smite(rage) once per encounter. I'd rather consider doubling(or even tripling) the daily uses of every ability, or their daily effectiveness, maybe introducing an appropriate delay between each use. Think about the paladin's Lay on Hands class ability... ok, it's still useful used in combat, but non comparable to the 1d8+1 healing ability once every 1d6+1 rounds of a 1st level cleric in other situations. And, talking about clerics, I'm considering the idea of increasing their recharge time to 1d8+1 at lower levels... but that's just an idea for now  EDIT: I'd also consider increasing the daily use of abilities and feats with a single daily use from 1 to 2 or even 3/day (especially the Sudden metamagic feats). |
| Lina_Inverse04-15-06, 09:19 PM | Paladins are less a problem than barbarians really. Paladins main thing is smite, if you want just set it at its X/day as the number of levels below top for recharge. Barbarians though, arent supposed to get rage every fight untill they get the 4th rage per day, so i have no idea there. Except maybe makeing rage a 1round thing with no penaltys on a recharge similiar to paladin. |
