I am reworking nearly all of dnd to make my own players handbook 3.6 (so to speak) I have changed a great many things, one of the greatist is that characters are now able to adventure for longer periods of time without having to stop and rest for spells and such. Warlocks, Incarnum characters, and my own reworked version of the Dementia summoner are all going to be playing major roles. They are able to adventure for a wuite a long time... so here is one of the small delemas I have run into.

I am putting the magic system into recharge magic with some variations. So how unbalancing do you think it would be to make a Hexblade's signature ability the hex, a recharge ability? And what recharge should it have? I am trying to keep the power level of the game somewhat around the same levels, though i know that adding in recharge magic is going to up the ante a bit.

The hexblade was always a class that troubled me... they never get that many uses of hex and its their signature ability, PLUS it allows a saving throw... it seems very hard to justify something like that. I thought something like a 1 minute recharge with the optional ability to instantly recharge it a small number of times per day would be good. That way you could use it at least once in a fight, and if the fight is long enough mabey even more than that. But you would still need to make sure you picked who you wanted to curse very carefully since you don't have many of these floating around.

thoughts?

The hexblade is basically a variant paladin, without the religious or alignment affliations. I would do for it exactly what you do for paladins. If you have lay on hands (or smite evil) recharge, have hex recharge at the same rate.

Hex may be the class's signature ability, but it is hardly the classes only benefit, considering it has fighter BAB, spells like a paladin or ranger, fighter HD, and a plethora of special abilities that exceeds even a paladin's list (albeit, perhaps not quite as nice as the paladin's Divine Grace or Lay on Hands), including Mettle and Arcane Resistance at low levels.

If other classes are using similar Rechage mechanics then I would say that you should follow the guidelines for Charm effects and set the recharge time at 30 minutes to 12 hours.

My suggestion is for something in the neighborhood of about 30 min to 1 hour. This could ensure that it's up for 1 combat, and maybe if you're the stealthy type you could maybe hex a couple of people before entiring into combat (as each hex will last for 24 hours).

One suggestion that came up in another thread is to make the use of this ability operate similarly to a mechanic used for the Kensai. In short; using the Ability would require a Concentration check DC 15, +5 for every previous successful use of the ability within 24 hours.

truth be told paladins are going to be a PrC in this world. So lay on hands and smite and such arn't going to be recharges. they are going to be a certain amount per day.

The biggest reason that i think the hex should be either more times per day or recharging is because it allows a save. Divine grace, lay on hands, cure desease, desease immunity, fear resistance... paladins get all these things and they never fail... the hex blade gets this great hex... that allows a fairly easy saving throw. At level one they are going to be lucky to get it to stick. It seems like they are giving up alot. Heavy armor, fighter feats, ect. just for spells they don't get many of, a familiar and a resistable hex... mabey its me but they seem to lack for a little something.

I like the idea of making it a 30 minute recharge. What i might do is make it a 30 minute recharge and then have every 5 or 6 levels get a free use. Basically a certain number of times per day you can auto reset the use timer to give you another shot to lay on a curse, or to try and curse more than one person.
