In some of my spare time I've started fiddling around with the 3.5 rules, with the intention of optimizing alot of the mechanics, increasing player choices and flavour and so forth- rather than just patching things like UA rules tries to I'm considering re-building core mechanics from the ground up as necessary. Its a big project, since every change leads to more changes elsewhere.
thus far I have changed some racial abilities modifiers, removed cross-class skills, changed magic item creation to use skills rather than feats and not cost xp, half rewritten the grapple rules from scratch, adopted weapon proficiencies based on skill points (1 rank of weaponry skill = proficiency in one weapon group), changed resurrection to cost 1 Con point per use, changed healing spells to heal past on the targets level rather than caster level (see "all cure spells are broken" in Regdar's), started work on some more core classes, rewritten the monk and bard completely, and so forth. I'm also fiddling with the stacking rules e.g. I was going to make shields a Deflection bonus, and make armour/natural armour not stack.
Anyway what I currently need to do (any could use any ideas ppl have) is
-replace favoured classes with something else
-possibly re-do the multiclassing system from scratch if anyone has any ideas?
-get any ideas for adding flavour back to the system
I was considering changing hit rolls from Str to Dex, also- opinions?. (to go with armour as DR).

If you are in the business of optimizing the core mechanics I suggest taking a look at Mana Systems and new Alignment...

I too have been thinking about revamping the whole system and possibly making a 4th edition, I know thats stretching it a little but I believe it is wholely possible. I think the magic system in DND and Alignment are the main things that could use new systems. I also think that adding the old second edition way of making different XP progressions for different core classes thus eliminating the Unbalanced factor. Possibly the addition of weapon speed? IMO the best system would be dusting off older aditions and fusing them with 3E rules.

I wrote a article that should be in Regdars Repository when ever they check the posts about the two dirty words on the boards: Broken and Unbalaced, whenever it gets up everyone should read it.

I have been looting some stuff from older editions that IMHO should have been kept. I'm not so sure about weapon speed: IRL I don't believe having a smaller weapon lets someone strike first. Alignment does need some updating but what to change it to? I do think the word "evil" is used far too often, it can leads to black-and-white, children's cartoon style bad guys.
I'm currently thinking of reviving 2E multiclassing (splitting xp between classes and advancing in multiple classes separately) but having all the classes use the same xp table for simplicity's sake.
As for magic, yes a system of "power points" or "magic points" is definetely the way to go as compared to spell memorization. I'll have a look at UA's optional systems for this and try to create an alternate system to distinguish wizards and sorcerors. I've considered that magic may be too "reliable" in D & D also so maybe there should be some sort of dice roll to determine how well a spell works/if it works, as well.
