| Arcanis the wacher01-18-05, 11:48 PM | can a person make a reflex roll to doge a melee and/ or a ranged atk not from a trap instead of useing there AC. my DM is doing this and i do not think he can by the rules. and it suck for the fighter and the barb. |
| JTalbain01-19-05, 12:10 AM | Strictly speaking, the DM can do this by claiming Rule 0. :D Besides, that though, no. He has changed the rules for the game. I wouldn't like that change, because there are some traps that it doesn't make sense for them to be a reflex save. If a crossbow bolt is fired by a machine or a person, it still needs to try to make it past armor, shield, deflection, etc. Claiming all rogues and monks just nimbly dodge aside from the attacks, while the fighter who gives himself total cover behind his tower shield is unable to avoid the same bolt as the monk is really, really, stupid. Likewise, with non-trap attacks, well, I just gotta say this: Your DM is giving everyone an Epic feat for free. nuff said. |
| Degobah01-19-05, 03:05 AM | What he said. At best, a 10th level rogue can attempt a Reflex save for 1/2 damage, once per day, with Defensive Roll. Strictly speaking, even traps often use Attack rolls rather than reflex saves (which is why Trap sense gives a bonus to AC versus traps). A crossbow bolt or pit spike for example should have its own attack bonus and have to hit the character's AC-- see the sample traps in the DMG. Reflex saves are only for effects that fill an area, like fireball. If the GM uses Reflex saves to dodge attacks, what is he actually using a character's AC for, anyway? |
