In Unearthed it says a variant rogue can use fighter bonus feats instead of getting sneak attack... Would it be fair to let them qualify for the weapon specialization line even though they have no fighter levels?

Our group has always figured so, since you get 'feats as a fighter'. Seemed to make the most sense...

Here's my question regarding the feat rogue varient. Do you get an extra feat at 1st level and every even numbered level thereafter, or do you get a feat at 1st level and every odd level thereafter?

The fact that it says "As a fighter" seems to indicate the former, the fact that it says "In place of sneak attack" seems to indicate the latter.

The bonus fighter feats are a replacement for the sneak attack. Thus they are swapped when the rogue should be getting the normal ability. So I think it should be level 1,3,5, etc.

Yes and no, they can as long as they meet all prerequisites.

Bonus Feats
At 1st level, a fighter gets a bonus combat-oriented feat in addition to the feat that any 1st-level character gets and the bonus feat granted to a human character. The fighter gains an additional bonus feat at 2nd level and every two fighter levels thereafter (4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 18th, and 20th). These bonus feats must be drawn from the feats noted as fighter bonus feats. A fighter must still meet all prerequisites for a bonus feat, including ability score and base attack bonus minimums.

So the only way they can take Weapon Specialization as a bonus "Rogue variant" feat is if they have four levels of fighter already. This works the same as some other classes such as the Psychic Warrior which can select any Psionic or any Fighter Bonus feat, yet he still must have the requisite Fighter levels to gain the "Fighter only feats".

This is how I've always interpretted it as well, but I had a player interpret it differently.

The problem with that is the introduction of house rules. True, legally standing, a rogue would not be able to take weapon speciallization. But this house rule takes away from the rogue's major combat advantage. Allowing at least specialization would help counter that loss.
